- Smith says squad will stick to its game-plan

Tommy Smith believes Burnley’s team showed exactly why it is top of the Sky Bet Championship in Saturday’s 3-1 win at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“Before the game we knew how they were going to play; very physically. That’s what they’re good at and they play to their strengths. There’s no hiding from the fact that they’re a good side; they’re top of the league for a reason. It was a tough game all in all,” Smith told htafc.com.

“We conceded two set piece goals, which is unlike us really; we very rarely concede from set pieces. To concede the second just before half time was a big blow.

“We had chances; we always do. We create chances in most games and Saturday was no different. The big difference was they took their chances – and they didn’t have very many – and we didn’t. That’s why they’re top of the league.”

Everyone connected with Town is keen to see the team get the points on the board as the 2015/16 season draws to a close and Tommy believes the squad’s focus on performances will see it happen.

“We feel we have enough in our squad. The Head Coach gives us confidence. He tells us not to worry about the league table, but to focus on performances and the results will come. We’re all confident that will be the case.

“We’ll keep sticking to what we and the Head Coach believes in and I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

Under David Wagner, Smith has been one of the most regular selections and the right back praised the impact the Head Coach has had on his game.

“The Head Coach has been very good to me. He’s made no secret of what he wants me to do in games; he’s constantly telling me. I’m happy to do that.

“He’s given me a good run in the team, which I’m delighted about. I’m more than happy to do what he tells me.

“I should have possibly had two goals on Saturday, but I’m sure the goals will come. I’ll keep getting forward as much as the Head Coach wants me to.”
