Frankie Bunn’s Under-21 side tasted defeat for the first time since 29 August 2015 on Monday afternoon thanks to a goal in each half from hosts Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
Bunn’s side was without regulars William Boyle and Philip Billing, whilst Irish duo Ronan Coughlan and Danny Kane was injured.
The team did include Irish centre back Kevin Toner, a trialist from Aston Villa.
The Blades, who moved within seven points of the Terriers with this win, opened the scoring in the 20th minute through a good strike from Ben Whiteman and netted a second against the run of play in the second half, with Harrison McGahey converting a corner.
