PREVIEW: TOWN OPENER AGAINST BRENTFORD

3 August 2016

Town's first Sky Bet Championship match of the season

- Town face Brentford in first game of the season
- Opening game of the Sky Bet Championship 2016/17 season
- Kick off is at 3pm at the John Smith’s Stadium

David Wagner’s First Team will take on Brentford in the opening game of the Sky Bet Championship season in a 3pm kick off on Saturday.

Huddersfield Town is looking to break the gate record for an opening game of the season when they take on Brentford this weekend.

The record was previously set in the Club’s centenary year in a 1-1 draw with Stockport in 2008 with the attendance hitting 15,578.

Fans will also be able to get a first glimpse of the new signings brought in by David Wagner this summer.

The opposition
After a blistering end to the season Head Coach Dean Smith will look for his side to continue their good form into the new campaign.

Smith is entering his first full season in charge of the Bees on the back of winning seven of his last nine games.

Brentford only won one of their six pre-season friendlies; they beat VFL Bochum 1-0 away from home. Most recently they drew 1-1 with Milwall in a testimonial for defender Tony Craig.

Brentford players to watch
Fit again striker Scott Hogan is a player Town fans will know a lot about. After returning from injury towards the end of the last season the striker scored twice against Town in Brentford’s 5-1 win.

He scored seven goals in seven league games for Brentford last season and was linked with a move to Premier League Champions Leicester earlier this summer.

Last season’s top scorer Lasse Vibe will also look to hit the ground running again this year.

The Denmark international scored fourteen goals last season and was a key part of Smith’s successes.

New signing Romaine Sawyers could have a big impact on the Championship this season and the Bees could look at him as a replacement for Alan Judge who broke his leg against Ipswich last season, while Sam Saunders will also be a key member of their midfield.

A player Brentford fans will want to see more of this season is Andreas Bjelland. The Danish defender signed last season and was the Club’s record signing but missed large parts of the season due to injury.

Brentford Signings
Dean Smith has only added four players to his First Team squad during the current window, one of which has already been mentioned.

24 year-old Romaine Sawyers was in the PFA League 1 Team of the Season last year and signed on a free transfer from Walsall this summer.

The Bees have also added Daniel Bentley from Southend to challenge Jack Bonham for the number one spot, while Callum Elder has signed on loan from Leicester City to replace Jake Bidwell who joined QPR.

Smith also signed John Egan from Gillingham. Similarly to Sawyers, the young defender was named in the PFA Team of the Season in League 1 and joined after his contract expired with the Gills this June.
