MATCH PREVIEW: SHREWSBURY TOWN (A)

7 August 2016

A look ahead to Tuesday night's fixture

- Town face Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Cup
- Round One of the EFL Cup
- Kick-off is at 7.45pm at New Meadow

On the back of Saturday’s season-opening win, David Wagner’s Terriers will travel to Shrewsbury Town in Round One of the EFL Cup on Tuesday; 7.45pm kick-off.

Huddersfield Town will be looking to embark on a cup run against a team it has not faced since back in 1995.

The last time the two sides met was in the old Division Two as Shrewsbury ran out 2-1 winners; their first win in the last eight meetings.

The opposition

The Blues are managed by Scotsman Micky Mellon, who was appointed in 2014 following the Club’s relegation to League 2.

Having led previous club Fleetwood Town into the Football League, he took his new team to promotion at the first attempt in 2014/15.

Last season the Shrews finished 20th in League 1, one place and four points above Doncaster Rovers in the final relegation spot.

Shrewsbury were beaten by recently relegated MK Dons by a single goal in the team’s first game of the Sky Bet League 1 season at New Meadow on Saturday; it’s near 10,000 capacity stadium opened in 2007.

Shrewsbury Town players to watch

New signing and striker Louis Dodds has impressed their supporters since joining in the summer from Port Vale.

The striker who hailed from the Leicester City Academy scored eight goals in League 1 last season.

Robust defender Adam El-Abd was another summer signing this season joining from Bristol City.

The former Egyptian international will be experienced playing against Town after spending the majority of his career at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Midfielder Shaun Whalley was a key player for Shrewsbury in the second half of last season.

The quick, skilful winger scored seven goals for Micky Mellon’s side after Christmas and helped them stay in League 1 last year.

Last season’s Player of the Season Abu Ogogo (pictured above) is one for Town fans to watch. The industrious midfielder won the home fans over with his tough tackling displays and helped them stay in the league.

Shrewsbury Town Signings

It’s been a busy summer for Shrewsbury Town with twelve players leaving the Club and nine new ones coming in.

Three players joined from fellow League 1 side Port Vale, including Louis Dodds who was mentioned above.

Following Dodds to New Meadow were versatile defender Ryan McGivern and striker AJ Leitch-Smith.

Former Man City youngster Antoni Sercevic has joined from fellow League 1 side Fleetwood Town, while midfielder Gary Deegan joined from Southend United.

Shrewsbury Team News

Defenders Olly Lancashire and Abu Ogogo may be installed in the starting line-up on Tuesday night after missing out on Saturday, whilst Mellon has indicated he may sign another striker ahead of the EFL Cup game; he currently has just two on the books.

Town Team News

Town will be without midfielders Philip Billing (ankle) and Harry Bunn (hamstring) who were both injured during Town’s training camp in Austria, while Dean Whitehead is again suspended.

Jason Davidson missed out on Saturday through illness but could return, whilst David Wagner indicated that Nahki Wells (knee) could feature in the squad.

Elias Kachunga will be monitored after a knock to the leg forced him off on the 65 minute mark on Saturday.
