Town’s Under-21 side recorded a fourth straight Professional Development League 2 North win on Monday afternoon, running out as comfortable 3-0 winners at Crewe Alexandra.
Once again, Senior Professional Development Coach Frankie Bunn named no overage players in his match day 16, with only Duane Holmes, Philip Billing and William Boyle having any First Team experience.
Academy scholars Jacob Hanson, Regan Booty and Rekeil Pyke started the game, with fellow Under-18 player Jack Boyle on the bench.
Meanwhile, top scorer Flo Bojaj was sidelined through a groin injury sustained during last week’s Under-21 win over Ipswich Town and Jake Charles is on international duty with Wales Under-21s.
The young Terriers took the lead in the game in the 27th minute, thanks largely to some good play from midfielder Sondre Tronstad. The 20 year-old Norwegian robbed Crewe of the ball in the home side’s half and set up striker Pyke, who nutmegged the goalkeeper from close range for his third Under-21 goal of the season.
Going into the second half with a one goal lead, Bunn’s side really turned on the style in the second 45 minutes. The second goal came just seven minutes after the restart when a Crewe goal kick was returned forward with aplomb and midfielder Duane Holmes ran clear before beating the goalkeeper one-on-one. That’s four goals in just eight starts for the Academy graduate this term.
The deserved third goal came quarter of an hour from the end when substitute Jack Boyle’s low cross was spilled by the home goalkeeper, leaving skipper William Boyle with the simple task of tapping home for his second of the campaign.
