COLCHESTER 1 TOWN U21s 2

24 March 2015

Duane Holmes & Rekeil Pyke seal the win

A youthful Town Under-21 side recorded a great victory at Colchester United’s Florence Park in the Professional Development League 2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Following quickly on from the 3-1 home win over Swansea City at PPG Canalside on Saturday morning, Senior Professional Development Coach Frankie Bunn took his side on one of its longest trips of the season to play against the Essex-based outfit.

Bunn’s squad featured no overage players and four Under-18 players in the starting XI; three of which were first year scholars.

Midfielder Duane Holmes was by far and away the most experienced member of the team; only Philip Billing and captain William Boyle had made a Football League appearance otherwise.

Frankie was also without the services of regulars Jake Charles and Joe Wright, who are on international duty with the Wales Under-21 side.

Ben Holmes was named in the line-up and Ed Wilczynski among the substitutes, as the terms of their Youth Loans to Hyde FC allow them to feature for Town’s Development Squad at the same time.

The hosts actually took the lead in the 26th minute after Tosin Olufemi got in down the Town left; although his cross was half-blocked, the ball ran to Macauley Bonne and he converted past Lloyd Allinson.

It took only two minutes of the second-half for Town to level. A poor clearance from the Colchester goalkeeper was seized upon on the right by Ben Holmes and his cut-back into the area wasn’t properly dealt with, allowing striker Flo Bojaj and Duane Holmes to combine; the latter scoring from close range.

Town scored the deciding goal in the 68th minute. Left back Jack Senior and midfielder Philip Billing worked the ball from the left into the centre of the pitch, where Duane worked a one-two with Academy scholar Jack Boyle before finding striker Rekeil Pyke in space. The 17 year-old made no mistake, reversing his shot into the bottom left corner for his fourth Under-21 goal in just seven starts.

Highlights from the win will appear on the Club’s official YouTube channel – www.youtube.com/officialhtafc - on Wednesday.
