TOMMY: WE WANT MORE NEXT TERM

11 June 2015

Smith looking forward to 2015/16

Tommy Smith is looking to help Huddersfield Town build on a positive season ahead of the 2015/16 Sky Bet Championship fixtures being released on Wednesday

The defender was a virtual ever-present throughout 2014 and the first half of 2015 as the Terriers finished in the Club’s highest league position for a decade.

Reflecting on the 2014/15 campaign, Tommy explained:

“I think it was a positive season, definitely, although throughout the course of the season there was obviously times that I think we could have done better. We maybe let ourselves down in certain games, but overall finishing 16th in the league and on the back of the unbeaten end to the season, it feels like a good season.”

Town had difficult spells during the season, such as the winless run through late February and March.

Smith continued: “There will always be spells, but that is just the nature of the league.

“It is not just us who endured such a spell over the course of the season; there were teams up at the top end of the table who had spells where they did not win. Bournemouth won the league and they went through a spell where they did not win a few games, so that’s just the nature of the league.

“We’ve got to try and find as much consistency as we can. It’s very difficult, but we will definitely look to do that next season and have more consistent results on more of a permanent basis. We always talk about consistency.

“The Championship is a difficult league. There are some big clubs in this league; a lot of which have been in the Premier League with massive fan bases. To find that consistency is very tough.

“That’s why I think our seven game unbeaten finish that we achieved at the end of the season deserves credit. We will definitely look for more of that next season, because you never know where it will take you.”

Excitement for the 2015/16 Sky Bet Championship campaign will soon build when the fixtures are released on Wednesday (click HERE for info), with Tommy expecting another tightly contested division.

“There’s ability in every club’s squad. When the fixtures come out for next season I don’t think you could pick where the teams are going to finish; it is so unpredictable.

“You would not have thought for one minute that Wigan would have gone down in the season just gone, or that Fulham would have been down there after coming from the Premier League. It’s so unpredictable and I think that’s what is great about our league.

As for Town’s chances of a successful 2015/16, Tommy is feeling positive:

“I think people lose sight of the fact that we have only been in this division for three years. I think we have shown progress over those three years and I think that’s a positive.

“We finished 16th last season, with a decent points tally, so next season we will look to finish even higher.”
