NAHKI UNAVAILABLE AS BERMUDA LOSE

16 June 2015

Wells’ nation out of World Cup qualifiers

Huddersfield Town striker Nahki Wells had to watch from the sidelines as his national team, Bermuda, were knocked out of the running to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Bermudians were defeated 1-0 on aggregate by Guatemala in the Second Round of the CONCACAF 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying.

The tie was played home and away over two legs, with the winners advancing to the Third Round.

After a goalless first leg in Guatemala on Friday, last night’s second leg at the Bermuda National Stadium in Devonshire ended 1-0 to the visitors, with defender Stefano Cincotta netting the only goal in the 27th minute.

The defeat brought an end to Bermuda’s unbeaten 2015; a run stretching seven games.

With Guatemala ranked 93rd by FIFA compared to Bermuda’s 126th, it was always going to be a tough ask to progress for the Bermudians, but it was made harder by Town striker and Bermuda captain Wells’ absence through injury.

Nahki sustained an ankle injury in training ahead of the first leg and although his availability was touch and go for last night’s game, he didn’t make it.

Nahki scored three goals in Bermuda’s 8-0 aggregate win over the Bahamas in the First Round of the qualifying campaign, taking his tally to five goals in nine competitive international appearances.
