Winger joins Town until the end of 2015/16
- Huddersfield Town announce Carayol signing
- Season-Long loan until the end of 2015/16 campaign
- Comments from Chris Powell
Huddersfield Town has today completed the signing of Mustapha Carayol from Middlesbrough on a Standard Loan.
The loan is scheduled to run until 31 May 2016, although there is a break clause available to both clubs during January 2016.
Carayol, 26, is a right-footed winger usually playing on the left side of the pitch. Known for his power and pace, he has a direct style of play.
Huddersfield Town Manager Chris Powell commented:
“Mustapha is a player who has always been a threat when my team has opposed him due his natural ability, his raw pace and trickery. I’m sure he will excite our fans and cause problems for other teams.
“Mustapha is someone who has always been on the list. He went out on loan last year and we’ve kept an eye on his situation. Now was the right time to act and bring him in.
“I think it’s vital in the Championship that you have as much pace as possible in your team – particularly away from home.
“We have good players, but we know we’ve wanted to add in various positions. It’s hard to get deals over the line – there’s a lot that goes on.”
On whether Carayol’s arrival could lead to other Town players leaving on loan to gain match fitness or further experience, Chris added:
“We have other players who haven’t managed to get many minutes as yet. I have to strike the right balance as you need a squad to choose from, but equally I understand that game time is important for fitness and development. Regardless of the work you do with players to get them up to the right level, nothing beats games.
“I recognise two or three players may have to go out on loan. We started that process with Murray and it may now be the case with one or two more.”
Born in The Gambia, Mustapha moved to London as a child and spent spells in the youth systems at Swindon Town and Macclesfield Town before signing a first professional contract at Milton Keynes Dons.
He made his Dons debut in the League Cup in August 2007, but that transpired to be one of only two appearances for the Club. Instead he furthered his experience through a loan spell at Blue Square Premier League side Crawley Town where he made 14 starts and 12 substitute appearances, scoring twice.
Carayol then joined Torquay United permanently in July 2008, where he made 27 starts and 27 substitute appearances across the Blue Square Premier and League 2, scoring six goals.
He turned down a new contract at the Club at the conclusion of the 2009/10 campaign and subsequently moved to Lincoln City for a reported compensation fee of £35,000. He made 28 starts and nine substitute appearances, scoring four goals, but was made available for transfer at the end of the season following the Club’s relegation from the Football League.
In June 2011, Mustapha moved to Bristol Rovers for an undisclosed fee on a two year contract. It was at the Memorial Ground that Carayol rose to prominence, with a series of excellent performances attracting the attention of several Sky Bet Championship clubs.
Carayol chose to join Middlesbrough on an initial three year deal in August 2012 for a reported £250,000 where he has gone on to make 40 starts and 14 substitute appearances over two seasons, scoring 12 goals.
He spent the end of last season on loan at fellow Championship side Brighton, making four starts and one substitute appearance. During late April 2015, he signed a two year contract extension at the Riverside Stadium.
Mustapha will wear the number 10 shirt at Huddersfield Town.
