FRANKIE: OUR BEST OF PRE-SEASON

Bunn comments on the U21’s 4-2 win at Stalybridge

Huddersfield Town’s Senior Professional Development Coach Frankie Bunn rated the Under-21’s 4-2 win at Stalybridge Celtic as the team’s best performance of the pre-season campaign.

Trailing by the only goal at the interval, Bunn’s side turned on the style in the second-half and soon led before sealing the victory with four goals in 45 minutes.

“We stood up to the physical challenge that came in from set plays, such as long throw-ins into our box, but having competed well we switched off on a second ball from one and they scored.

“We looked a bit slicker and we had a 15 minute purple patch where we started at the back, played through the thirds and created chances. That period, early in the second-half, was our best of the game. This was the best display of pre-season in what was probably the toughest test we’ve had,” Frank told htafc.com post-match.

The introduction of two Under-18 players – Regan Booty and Rekeil Pyke – at half-time coincided with the upturn in performance and Frankie explained that there is plenty of promise in Town’s younger age groups, but that it still needs nurturing:

“We have got some good young footballers who keep striving to play football and we must endorse that and encourage them to keep getting on the ball.

“After that purple patch, we then switched off a bit and stopped doing the things we are good at. We started going a little bit longer and you have to stay brave and get on the ball and do your stuff.”

Overall, Bunn was happy that his side produced its best performance of the embryonic 2015/16 campaign for the eve of the new Professional Development League 2 season:

“I was slightly disappointed at Brighouse, particularly in how we performed in the final third, but we were great at that in the second-half tonight. There were some pleasing performances and some terrific goals; the link up play, build up and movement was quite cohesive and good to see.

“Hopefully this is a sign the team is gelling well before the start of the season.”
