POWELL: I HOPE THE FANS ARE PROUD

Chris reviews the 1-0 win at Forest

Huddersfield Town Manager Chris Powell praised the performance of his players in today’s 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

“This was the type of performance we should put in more often away from home. We gave ourselves a platform to start the game and grew, which you want to do on someone else’s patch,” Chris told htafc.com.

“I felt we played more football than them and we had a lot of good situations in their final third, where maybe we didn’t made the decisions that we should have done. When we did – like for the goal – we got some quality, like Jacob Butterfield’s sumptuous pass to Sean Scannell. I thought we controlled it.

“I think the confidence was there for everyone to see and that’s what happens on a good run. We’ve got seven points from a last possible nine at a very important time.

“This lets our fans see exactly what we’re capable of. We haven’t done it consistently, but I enjoyed today. Against Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich and today in Nottingham – barring his wonderful save and catch towards the end – I thought we managed any pressure really well.

“I’m glad our fans are going home happy today. We want to build a bit of momentum to keep them with us because for a club like us, positivity is so important. We had a tough period recently and it was important that the group of players got the support they needed.

“I hope the fans are proud of their team today after seeing their team put a shift in and create chances.”

Powell took the time to praise a few of his players for their performances:

“I thought every player did their part today. I thought James and Nahki worried Forest at times – both had chances – and Sean Scannell is coming alive again. It’s important to remember Sean hasn’t played this much football since joining Huddersfield, so I’m pleased for him.

“At times Reece James found it quite tough, but he’s bedded in really well and we still haven’t lost since he arrived. Maybe I should have got him in September!

“I have to give a special mention to Tommy Smith today. Michail Antonio is a very good player at this level, but we didn’t give him a kick. I spoke to Tommy on Thursday and told him to ensure he engaged Antonio early and he never got a head of steam today.

“If a full back sees the board go up and opposing winger is going off, you know you’ve done your job. Tommy saw off Antonio today; he was outstanding. He’s another young player earning his trade.”

With four games of the season remaining, Powell wants the team to continue its momentum:

“There’s no chance the players will simply ‘go through the motions’ with me here. We weren’t safe coming into today and even now, as miracles sometimes still happen in football.

“We are still a few points short of where we should be, but you can’t keep saying ‘if only’; we are where we are for a reason.

“The pressure was on recently and the players have handled themselves well. Ipswich at home and Forest away are tough games, but we’ve organised ourselves and played our football. I think we’ve been the better side in both games.

“Even in the Fulham game we performed and created, only for nothing to go in our favour. Now things are, which is great.”
