Development Squad wins in South Yorkshire

Frankie Bunn’s Under-21 side survived a second-half fight-back from opponents Sheffield United to win its latest Professional Development League 2 game of the season this afternoon.

A brace from Danny Ward – one of the trio of overage players permitted in the side along with Murray Wallace and Martin Paterson – netted a brace in the first-half to put the Terriers in control.

Ward’s first came inside the first 10 minutes from close range, with his second going in just before the interval. The second was of particular note; a superb volley after equally impressive work from midfielder Philip Billing, who won back possession and drove at the home defence before crossing.

The game looked settled when Academy striker Ronan Coughlan grabbed his first goal at Under-21 level just moments after replacing Martin Paterson, knocking the ball home after Flo Bojaj’s initial effort was saved just after the hour mark.

However, a brace of Sheffield United goals in five minutes - Jamie McDonagh netting from the second phase of a corner and Ben Whiteman converting a penalty – gave Town a nervy 15 minutes at the end of the game, which they saw out.

This win takes Town’s Under-21 record to seven wins from 10 competitive games so far this season. The side’s next fixture is at home to Birmingham City on Monday 3 November; 1pm kick-off at PPG Canalside.

Highlights from the game will appear on the Club’s YouTube channel – www.youtube.com/officialhtafc - on Wednesday.
