CLAYTON SCOOPS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

6 May 2014

2014 Annual Awards conclude the season

Adam Clayton was the evening’s big winner as Town’s 2013/14 Sky Bet Championship season finished with the 2014 Annual Awards.

In front of over 300 Town fans at a packed Cedar Court Hotel in Huddersfield, midfielder Clayton won the prestigious Hargreaves Memorial Trophy having received 60% of the votes from the Club’s supporters.

Sponsored by Club Partner Expect Distribution and hosted by Paul Ogden and Tanya Arnold, 12 awards were up for grabs on the evening from another season full of ups and downs for the Terriers.

Antoni’s Memorial Academy Player of the Year
WINNER: JOE WILKINSON
Runners-up: Flo Bojaj, William Boyle

Second year scholar Joe was given this accolade by the staff at the Huddersfield Town Academy. A runner-up in the same category last year, Joe has captained the Under-18s to the Professional Development League 2 Title and the quarter finals of the FA Youth Cup this term.

He received his award – named in honour of Antoni Owczarek, a young Town fan who tragically lost his life in a car accident in 2004 – from the Kaminski family.

Media Player of the Year
WINNER: ADAM HAMMILL
Runners-up: Adam Clayton, Oliver Norwood

Winger Adam Hammill earned his first award of the evening from the media that cover ‘The Yorkshire Club’ for his willingness to be interviewed after the wins and losses of the campaign.

He received his award from sponsors Perrys Jaguar and Rocar Moores.

Most Assists Award
WINNER: ADAM HAMMILL
Runners-up: Danny Ward, Oliver Norwood

Adam’s second award soon followed. His 10 assists for his teammates this season earned him the top assists accolade – and ranks him among the best in the Sky Bet Championship.

He received his second award from category sponsor the Orchard Group.

The Golden Boot Award
WINNER: JAMES VAUGHAN
Runners-up: Danny Ward, Nahki Wells, Adam Clayton

Despite the injury that curtailed the second half of his season, James Vaughan was Town’s top scorer for a second consecutive campaign. His 12 goals this term puts him among a stunning list of Town players who have won this award more than once including Mark Lillis, Craig Maskell, Duncan Shearer, Jimmy Glazzard and George Brown.

James was presented with his trophy by Strikes CS.

Contribution to the Club
WINNER: BILL EXLEY

A name that may not be familiar to all Town fans, Bill was given this award after serving the Club as its match day tour guide for the last 17 years and for the Club for a whopping 44 years before retiring after the final home game of the season against Leicester City.

Bill was given his award by Longley Park KIA.

The 1908 Loyalty Award
WINNER: GRAHAM CLARK

Town fan Graham Clark became the first ever recipient of this award after attending every single home and away league and cup game the First Team played during the 2013/14 season, as well as following the Under-18s during their FA Youth Cup run.

Graham was presented with his trophy by Manager Mark Robins.

Worst Roommate Award
WINNER: ADAM CLAYTON
Runners-up: Anthony Gerrard, Adam Hammill

Voted for by the Town squad, Adam Clayton’s first win of the night was the one that nobody wanted! Lambasted for the beard that he grew throughout the season, he just took this accolade ahead of Anthony Gerrard and Adam Hammill.

Adam picked up his award from Club Captain Peter Clarke.

Champagne Moment
WINNER: THE FA YOUTH CUP RUN

An award created to celebrate a moment that might not grab all the headlines, the record-breaking run in the prestigious FA Youth Cup took this accolade. By reaching the quarter final stage before being narrowly knocked out by eventual finalists Fulham, the current crop of youngsters performed better than any of their peers in the last 30 years.

Academy Manager Mark Lillis, alongside scholars Flo Bojaj, William Boyle and Joe Wilkinson, came to the stage to collect this award from sponsor Storeplan.

Goal of the Season
WINNER: JOEL LYNCH VS. CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Voted for from a shortlist of 10 on the evening, Joel's long range piledriver was a popular winner.

Joel received his award from Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors.

Players’ Young Player of the Season
WINNER: TOMMY SMITH
Runners-up: Duane Holmes, Murray Wallace

The Town squad voted defender Tommy Smith as their Young Player of the Year after the defender made a seamless transition from the Under-21 squad into the First Team setup, where he has remained ever since.

Tommy collected his trophy from Louise Woollard Financial

Players’ Player of the Year
WINNER: ALEX SMITHIES
Runners-up: Adam Clayton, Anthony Gerrard

Ever-reliable stopper Alex Smithies was voted Player of the Year by his teammates for a second consecutive campaign after an ever-present year between the sticks for the Terriers, during which he has kept the side in games on several occasions with outstanding saves.

Alex received the award from Expect Distribution

Hargreaves Memorial Player of the Year
WINNER: ADAM CLAYTON
Runners-up: Adam Hammill, Paul Dixon

Midfield maestro Adam scooped the biggest prize on offer on the evening, with Town fans giving him the Player of the Year award at a landslide.

Clayton’s performances at the heart of the engine room have been consistently high throughout the season, with his seven goals a personal high for a single season.

This award is named after Town fans John and Edith Hargreaves, with their granddaughters Sarah and Kelly presenting Adam with the award.
