TOWN U21s CLINCH LEAGUE TITLE

10 March 2014

3-0 home win over Barnsley at PPG Canalside

Huddersfield Town’s Under-21 side cemented a first place finish in the Professional Development League 2 North table this afternoon courtesy of a comprehensive 3-0 win over visitors Barnsley at PPG Canalside.

The victory continued an impressive run in the League that has seen Steve Eyre’s side drop just two points all season, with an opening day draw at Nottingham Forest followed by 13 straight victories.

Today’s win against Barnsley has sealed the league title for Town’s Development Squad, securing a home game in the end of season Play-Offs against the Southern Division runners-up in the process.

Town played three overage players in Anton Robinson, Cristian Lopez and Jonathan Stead and it was the latter who gave his side the lead at the interval, although it was only secured thanks to several excellent saves from goalkeeper Lloyd Allinson after some good play from the visitors. Stead’s goal came after 11 minutes; Matt Crooks, impressing at centre half, played in Captain Jordan Sinnott on the right and Stead turned home his subsequent cross from close range.

The Terriers turned the screw in the second-half, netting two further goals. The second came just after the hour mark when striker Harry Bunn scored his fifth U21 goal in just seven starts, turning home at the second attempt after good work from Stead.

First year professional Paul Mullin (pictured above) scored the final goal of the game five minutes from time, sending a left footed drive curling into the top corner of the Barnsley goal from 25 yards out.

The game also featured a return from injury for striker Daniel Carr, who played the final half hour in place of Cristian.

Town’s team:
Lloyd Allinson; William Boyle, Joe Wright, Matt Crooks, Jordan Sinnott (c); Paul Mullin (Mikey Starkey, 86), Anton Robinson, Sondre Tronstad, Cristian Lopez (Daniel Carr, 63); Jonathan Stead (Ben Atkinson, 86), Harry Bunn
