EYRE: IT’S A PROUD DAY

10 March 2014

Development Coach delighted with league winning victory

Steve Eyre praised his core group of senior Development players as Town’s Under-21s secured the Professional Development League 2 North title at PPG Canalside.

A three goal victory over Yorkshire rivals Barnsley this afternoon means that Town can’t be caught at the top.

Eyre, who has managed the Terriers’ U21s for the past two seasons, praised trio Jordan Sinnott, Matt Crooks and Lloyd Allinson who have been mainstays in the side since the formulation of the Professional Development League.

He said: “I am very proud and pleased for all the players who have been involved over the past two seasons. When the Professional Development League was first set up we had five players from the Academy, so I am really pleased for the likes of Jordan Sinnott, Matt Crooks and Lloyd Allinson. I would say that they are the glue of this team.

“We have had other players who had gone on to seek challenges elsewhere and we can’t forget them.”

The victory, Town’s 13th of the season, saw Jon Stead, Harry Bunn and Paul Mullin all net.

“We always crave a clean sheet and take a lot of pleasure out of winning football matches; to win the league on the back of a victory is a fantastic feeling,” said Steve.

“Barnsley just wouldn’t go away and they kept knocking on the door. The game was stretched at times and they created a number of chances, but they met a goalkeeper who was having an outstanding game.

“We grew from the saves that Lloyd made and really stepped up. We took the game from them in the second half.

“In front of the goalkeeper were four defenders who were all playing out of position, which I think highlights how good our clean sheet was today.”

Moving forward, Eyre is keen for his players to continue their unbeaten record ahead of the end of season Play-Offs.

“It is important that the players continue to learn and enjoy themselves, but the main priority is to try and develop them into First Team players. Some of them have been in the Manager’s plans and some have come close. In terms of the full journey we are on the right path in terms of development.

“To get to this stage unbeaten and as title winners is something we are satisfied with. The focus now is to quickly and positively move onto to our next challenges of which there are many as we try to be our best at a great club.”
