Norwegian youth international arrives at Town
Huddersfield Town has today completed the signing of Norwegian youth international midfielder Sondre Tronstad.
The 18 year-old has joined the Terriers, pending international clearance, after his current contract with two-time champions IK Start came to an end at the close of the Norwegian season in November 2013 and Sondre chose to move to another club.
Sondre’s contract will run until the end of June 2016, with the Club having an option of a further year’s extension at that point.
Town and IK Start have mutually agreed a compensation package for Sondre.
Tronstad’s breakthrough into IK Start’s first team in 2012 was as a 16 year-old, he helped them gain promotion from Norway’s second tier – the Adeccoligaen League – into the top division, the Tippeligaen.
He has gone on to make 23 appearances for IK Start’s First Team, including nine games in the 2013 Norwegian top flight season, ahead of joining ‘The Yorkshire Club’. He will join the Club’s First Team squad, but also qualifies as an Under-21 player and is expected to begin his Town career playing matches in that group.
Huddersfield Town Manager Mark Robins commented:
“As part of our scouting activity in Scandinavia we watched Sondre on a number of occasions for IK Start as well as on international duty with Norway before we invited him to spend a week with us in late November 2013 after his season and contract ended.
“He impressed me and our staff during that training period; he has great technical ability and a superb passing range. He’s a central midfielder and is able to play as a deep-lying player or as a more advanced ‘number 10’.
“Sondre is only 18 years old and we believe can develop further with us. He has a real desire to learn and do well, so we’re excited about working with him over the coming weeks and months.
“We are building a group of young players, through a balance of careful acquisition and developing our Academy; that is getting stronger, with lots of potential and incorporating types that fit the long-term philosophy of the Club.”
Sondre will take the number 32 shirt at Huddersfield Town.
