PATO UNHAPPY WITH PERFORMANCE

1 January 2014

Goalscorer Martin on the 3-2 defeat at Burnley

Huddersfield Town showed real spirit to come back from two goals down to push high-flying Burnley right to the whistle on New Year’s Day, but goalscorer Martin Paterson wasn’t happy with thedisplay.

“We’re disappointed with our performance and the result; we ‘huffed and puffed’ today,” Pato told htafc.com. “We wanted to come here and set out our stall for the season, but perhaps because of the number of games we’ve had over the Christmas period we were a little flat in the first-half.

“We actually started well and got back in it once we’d conceded, but I did feel we were a bit flat. Conditions weren’t easy, but it wasn’t really a great performance from us and we know it.

“Burnley are strong at home and are up at the top of the League, but late in the game we were the ones looking most likely to get a goal. However, we opened ourselves up and they got another one to make it 3-1. It looked like the game was out of our reach, but right at the end the ball flashed across and we could have got a draw.

“We’re not happy with our performance and we will go away and analyse it, but we know that we can match these teams. We’ve now got to make sure we’re right at it in the next game.”

Paterson netted a brace on his return to Turf Moor after departing Burnley to join Town in the summer and explained that he was happy to give the travelling fans something to cheer.

“You always have to celebrate a goal because that’s what you live for. The Huddersfield faithful came here and paid their money on New Year’s Day and I wanted to celebrate, but after I put my finger up and gave the lads a cuddle I wanted to make sure I didn’t go over the top for the Burnley fans.

“The most important thing was that I got two goals for the Huddersfield fans. I’m a Huddersfield Town player now.

“I’ve got going, but I think there’s more to come from my game. It’s physically hard to get into a rhythm over the Christmas and New Year period because you’re always playing, but I’m delighted with my goal form and hopefully I’ll continue to do it.”
