29 January 2014

Date set for Fifth Round tie

Huddersfield Town’s Under-18 side will play Manchester United in the Fifth Round of this season’s FA Youth Cup on Friday 14 February, 7pm kick-off at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The game will be pay at the turnstiles for all supporters in the Direct Golf UK Stand lower tier, with admission priced at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions (under-18s and seniors).

This game will see Town’s Under-18s will host their counterparts from Manchester United in the most prestigious competition in youth football for the first time in 40 years.

Town were victorious over the Reds at the same stage in the Youth Cup back in 1973/74 as they made the final for the one and only time, eventually losing 2-1 to winners Tottenham Hotspur.

On the other hand, United’s youngsters have a rich history in the FA Youth Cup; they are 10 time winners – most recently in 2011 – and four time runners-up.

This season the young Terriers, managed by Professional Development Coaches Frankie Bunn and Tony Carss, have beaten Luton Town in Round Three (3-1 at home after extra time) and West Bromwich Albion away in Round Four (4-2 after extra time).

Town’s Under-18s are currently top of the Under-18 Professional Development League 2 table, having accumulated 37 points from 16 games.

As a category one Academy – one level above Town – Manchester United’s Under-18s play in the Barclays U18 Premier League North. They currently sit third with 31 points from 16 games.

United, who are managed by Paul McGuinness, have progressed to the Fifth Round of the FA Youth Cup courtesy of victories over Burnley (2-0 in Round Three) and a 1-0 extra time victory at Leicester City.
