TOWN FUTSAL PROGRESS IN NATIONAL CUP

17 February 2014

Club makes last 16 of competition

Huddersfield Town’s Futsal team breezed through the latest rounds of the Soccer AM FLT Futsal Cup to become one of the remaining 16 teams in the next round to be played in March.

The team, which is based at Huddersfield Town Community Trust’s Education Academy, is continuing to go from strength to strength following their success during 2012/13 as the reigning Northern Futsal Champions. The Futsal Cup is an exciting new addition to the FLT Futsal season which provides an opportunity to showcase the talent of the country’s Futsal squads.

Three wins from three against strong opposition including Blackburn Rovers, Cheltenham Town and Leicester City have cemented Huddersfield Town their place in the next round as the squad continues to build in confidence.

Jacob Cummings, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport student and Huddersfield Town Futsal player, enjoyed the experience at the Birmingham Futsal Arena last week:

“The atmosphere was electrifying. Even though the games were very difficult we had great belief in our team. We adapted our playing style very well to suit our oppositions and it was a fantastic team effort. We certainly have the determination, skill and motivation to progress to the final.”

The Education Academy provides high quality teaching and training with the sports, fitness and coaching sector offering a range of sports related qualifications from Level 1 to Level 3. With over 100 registered students it is developing a resounding reputation on and off the field. From September 2014, the Futsal Scholarship will be available to 16-18 year olds at levels 1, 2 and 3. This is a fantastic opportunity for talented players to represent Huddersfield Town FC whilst gaining a first class education.

Nicholas Stock, fellow student and Huddersfield Town Futsal player is enjoying his time as a student with the academy.

“The course is great and being able to train and play Futsal adds variety and fun. Although parts of the course are difficult, it is motivating to have the opportunity to represent Huddersfield Town in the Futsal team as a reward for completing my work. To get through to the last 16 of the Soccer AM FLT Futsal Cup is a great feeling. We have built the foundations of success and started a legacy for future students to come.”

Nigel Thewlis, Head Coach of the programme, commented:

“The lads have accomplished a great feat in getting where they have through passion and desire without which they would not have got this far. Everyone uses the old cliché ‘teamwork’ and it is often over-used, but they know they have to work hard for each other because on a futsal pitch there is nowhere to hide. Every kick, shot and dribble is exposed and full concentration is required from start to finish.”

Sky Sports has put a video together documenting the last 16 of the tournament - watch it HERE!
