CLAYTS: CONSISTENCY IS KEY

14 February 2014

Midfielder looks ahead to Birmingham

Adam Clayton has arguably been Town’s form player since the turn of the year and heading into the final third of the season he believes consistency is key.

Town have won four of their last ten games and looking ahead to the next month of fixtures Clayton said they provide a good opportunity to push on.

He said: “We have played some excellent football this season, but lately we haven’t hit those heights. We need to get back to that as soon as possible and I am sure the results will come.

Clayton’s comments come after a disappointing midweek defeat at home to Forest.

“Tuesday night felt like a game from last season,” he said. “We just couldn’t get a foothold in it and take control. The first goal proved vital and when they got ahead they were ruthless; they are one of the best teams in the division.

“I haven’t had a kick up the backside this week, but I have had a few this year,” Clayton said referring to Mark Robins’ post-Forest comments. “I’m not privy to those who got one, but whoever did I am sure they will be ready and raring to go tomorrow.

“We have got some fantastic, young lads in the dressing room and on occasions they need to be given direction.”

The midfielder has provided the assist for a winning goal and scored one of his own in Town’s two league wins during 2014 and speaking to htafc.com he expressed his pleasure with his form.

“Since I returned I have done well, but it is about continuing that form for the rest of the season. Consistency is key at the moment and that goes for the team as well.

“I try and keep the team ticking; the Manager wants me to be the start of attacks by feeding the wide men and strikers. I like being the anchor in midfield and feel it suits my attributes. As a result though, I am generally the last line ahead of the defence; I’m not the greatest tackler but I try my best to make interceptions.

“I like scoring goals, but the Manager has bestowed this position on me and I am enjoying it. To get five, six or seven goals from my deeper position is maybe like nine or 10 from a more central role. I am on four at the moment and two or three more would be a good return.

“In all honesty, I am not too fussed who scores; my only concern is that the team does well.”
