KANE PLAYS FOR IRELAND U17s

12 September 2013

Academy scholar plays 90 minutes in defeat

Huddersfield Town Academy scholar Danny Kane played his second match for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-17 side in an international friendly on Thursday afternoon.

The centre back, who joined the Terriers in the summer from Cherry Orchard FC, played the full 90 minutes as the Irish fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of hosts Slovakia.

Kane went close to opening the scoring in the match when he hit the post from close range in the second half.

He made his debut for the U17s earlier this week when they again lost to Slovakia, however, on that occasion they were beat 3-0.

The friendlies come just before the start of Ireland’s qualifying campaign for the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championships, which will be held in Malta.

The Republic is part of qualifying group seven alongside England, Gibraltar and Armenia. All the qualifying games will be played in Armenia between 25 September and 29 October 2013, with the top two teams qualifying automatically for the Elite Round of qualifying alongside the best two third placed teams from all 13 groups.
