KANE CAPPED IN IRELAND WIN

24 October 2013

Under-17s start tournament with victory

Huddersfield Town Academy scholar Danny Kane played the full game for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-17 side as it started the UEFA U17 Championships Qualifying Round with a win.

Ireland’s youngsters overcame Group Seven opponents Gibraltar in the opening fixture of the three game qualifying competition, which is being held in Armenia this month.

After falling behind to a first-half goal, Danny and the Irish fought back to win the game 4-1, with Danny playing all 80 minutes of the game and picking up a yellow card in the process.

Ireland's following games see them meet hosts Armenia on Saturday before finishing against England on Tuesday.

The nations occupying the top two positions of the round robin tournament will progress to the Elite Qualifying Round, with the best third placed team from the 13 groups.

Eventually eight nations will contest the 2014 UEFA U17 Championships in Malta.

Danny’s Huddersfield Town teammates are back in action at Canalside on Friday when they host visitors Brighton & Hove Albion in an 11am kick-off in the U18 Professional Development League. Frankie Bunn and Tony Carss’ side will be looking to extend its record of seven wins and one draw from its opening eight games of the season.
