Town teaching TV stars
A group of pupils from Thornhill Community Academy, the school made famous in the recent ‘Educating Yorkshire’ Channel 4 documentary series, are currently attending the Huddersfield Town Success Centre.
Fifteen pupils from Year 8 are participating in a series of computer based literacy and numeracy activities on Wednesdays over a six week period.
As well as following a web based maths learning programme with Success Centre teacher Emma Fox, the children will also be working on their persuasive writing techniques and comprehension skills with Success Centre manager Jeanette Palmer in order to brush up on their English skills. Many of the educational resources at the centre are football based and Huddersfield Town is supporting the programme by providing certificates and prizes to recognise the pupils’ achievements.
The project started with a bang recently as the youngsters took part in an hour long ‘behind the scenes’ stadium tour led by Club Ambassador Andy Booth. Although the pupils took in lots of the main features of the John Smith’s Stadium, to which most of them had never been, their favourite stop point was the home changing room, where they quizzed Boothy on his playing career.
Huddersfield Town Success Centre is a schools and community focused educational centre jointly managed by Huddersfield Town and Kirklees Council and based in the Fantastic Media Stand.
