WARD COULDN’T ASK FOR MORE ON RETURN

5 March 2013

Danny delighted with comeback

Danny Ward returned from injury to fire Town to a superb win over promotion-chasing Middlesbrough tonight and admitted he was delighted to make such an instant impact.

The talented winger hadn’t appeared on the pitch for the Terriers since the draw at Crystal Palace on 22 December due to a broken metatarsal and his inclusion among the substitutes this evening was a surprise to many – Danny included!

“I didn’t expect it to be honest!” the match-winner told htafc.com. “I think the plan was to get a full week of training – I trained for the first time yesterday – but ‘Scanz’ (Sean Scannell) pulled out with a hamstring injury and so I came in. Obviously I was as eager as anyone to get back playing, so I was buzzing when I got named on the team-sheet on the bench. I couldn’t ask for anything more than it to finish like that.”

Ward replaced Theo Robinson with 12 minutes to go and netted the winner in trademark fashion with a thumping left foot drive from the edge of the box.

“I came on in the hole and I got a bit of freedom because the game was open at that stage,” Danny continued. “I love cutting in from the right and I love having shots, as everyone knows, so that situation was ideal for me.

“I’ve been out for nearly two months now and I’d not started the season as well as I wanted to, but there are still quite a few games left and that gives me a lot of chance to show what I can do. I’ve still got a lot left in the tank.”

The win was Town’s second under the management of Mark Robins and Wardy believes that the drive of the players will serve them well between now and the end of the season.

“The results haven’t been going our way, but you could see the fight and desire from our lads tonight; we are not going to give up until the end of the season. We have the quality to win games and combined with the attitude we showed tonight, we deserved the three points.”

Next up for the Terriers is another home game when Charlton Athletic visit on Saturday and Danny explained the focus is now on the Addicks.

“Our focus is on winning the next game, so we’ll take it from there. We’re not really setting any more targets because we’ll start putting pressure on ourselves. We’ll take every game as it comes.”
