ROBINS: WE HAVE TAKEN TWO STEPS BACK

9 March 2013

Boss laments poor Charlton showing

Mark Robins bemoaned his players’ lack of quality in the final third as they fell to a narrow defeat against Charlton.

“What a difference a couple of days makes,” began Mark. “On Tuesday night we were a lot brighter and passed the ball well and got into goal scoring positions. Today looked like a real effort and we conceded a really poor goal.”

Callum Harriott scored the winner for the visitor’s in the third minute of the game.

“I am really disappointed,” continued Mark. “Charlton has moved up to 12th and that could have been us. When it isn’t going for you, you have to grind out results. We seemed to shoot ourselves in the foot a bit; it feels like we have taken one step forward and two steps back.

“The players tried to keep going, but it was a case of us not having the legs. We always struggle with the second game when we have got two in a week. Our challenge is to put two performances together; we have got a clear week now to work towards a very big game.

“We need to put today behind us and focus on Leeds because it was poor to watch.”

The Terriers got forward well throughout the game, but looked short of ideas in the final third.

“When the fans can see the players getting forward and being committed they get behind them. Our problem isn’t our effort; we are struggling to close teams down and also in the final third we aren’t good enough. When the ball went in the opposition’s area we were always on our heels. We didn’t have the quality to score.”

Mark delivered some good news on the injury front regarding striker Jermaine Beckford.

“He has a chance of being available for the Leeds game, but we will have to wait and see how he trains over the next week.”
