Daniel Carr opens his account in Town colours
Daniel Carr opened his Town account at Bootham Crescent with a well taken goal as the Terriers drew with League 2 York City.
The former Dulwich Hamlet youngster connected well with Sean Scannell’s cross to level the scores after poor defending in the first half had seen Wes Fletcher fire the home side ahead.
It was more of the same for Mark Robins in terms of selection at York City as Town continued their build up towards the 2013/14 Championship season.
The same team who played impressively during the first half at Chesterfield were given another chance to stake their claims for a starting berth come August 3.
However, if the first five minutes were anything to go by they were going to have to improve rapidly as poor defending allowed League 2 York to open the scoring. Neat interplay between Nigel Worthington’s front pairing freed striker Wes Fletcher who slotted home calmly.
Prior to that left-back Jake Carroll had to make a smart clearance at the back post after Jack Hunt had been rounded on the by-line.
At the other end, Adam Hammill was up to his old tricks with ball at feet and at times had York’s full-backs in a twist during the opening quarter. It was his cross in the ninth minute which almost brought Town level, but Michael Ingham did well to deny Martin Paterson in the air.
Ingham was in the action again a few minutes later as Town began to up the ante. James Vaughan collected Adam Clayton’s ball with his back to goal and after turning sharply forced York’s stopper into a fine low save.
However, the ‘keeper was beaten all ends up in the 21st minute and had his post to thank for preventing Hammill levelling the scores. Ward had earlier done well to set the ball up nicely for the former Wolves man whose full volley flicked the post before going behind.
In terms of chances, that was the final one of the half for both teams. Town, in soaring heat, tried to be positive and dominate the ball, but at times overplayed and were caught in possession by a well drilled York outfit.
The chances were back again at the start of the second 45, but they were all in favour of the home team who had once again started well. Firstly, goalscorer Fletcher curled over from the edge of the area before a good chance was headed over in the box.
Just like in the first, once five minutes of the second half had elapsed Town began to play – and almost to great effect when Ward drove and went past York’s last man, but his shot from the angle was tame.
Robins introduced both Sean Scannell and Oliver Norwood during the opening twenty minutes of the half and the former wasted no time in reminding the Town fans of what he is all about. The former Crystal Palace man left three York defenders in his wake with 68 minutes gone before the ball made its way to Ward on the right, whose shot was blocked well.
By the time the 75th minute had passed Town’s XI was almost unrecognisable from the start of the game with only Murray Wallace and Alex Smithies still on the pitch. And it was Smithies who was the next Town player in action as he sprawled across his line to palm away Ashley Chambers’ goal bound effort.
Paul Dixon had looked impressive since his introduction in the second half and it was his assist which earned Town their equaliser. The defender twisted his marker in, then out, before crossing deep to the waiting Daniel Carr who side footed home with aplomb in front of the travelling Town fans.
