PRE-SEASON STARTS WITH SPIREITES

11 July 2013

Robins takes team to Chesterfield on Saturday

Town’s First Team will be in action in its first pre-season friendly of the season on Saturday when it makes the relatively short trip to Derbyshire to take on League 2 Chesterfield, 3pm kick-off.

The Spireites have already beaten non-league Buxton 3-0 in a friendly and will be tough opponents for the Terriers in their first run-out following this week’s training camp in Marbella, Spain.

Last season a youthful Town team won 3-0 in a pre-season friendly at the new Proact Stadium, with the goals coming from Alan Lee, Jimmy Spencer and Jordan Sinnott.

Chesterfield – 2012/13 season

Chesterfield experienced a change of manager early on last season, with the long-serving John Sheridan leaving. He was eventually replaced by former Accrington Stanley Manager Paul Cook in October and he led the team to an eventual eighth place finish in League 2, just two points shy of the Play-Offs.

During last season Town loaned two players to Chesterfield; midfielder Chris Atkinson scored five goals in 16 appearances, whereas left back Liam Ridehalgh also played 16 times for the side.

Chesterfield – ones to watch

There could be two familiar faces in the Chesterfield side on Saturday. Winger Gary Roberts – a popular figure during his four years with the Terriers and part of the side that emerged victorious from the 2012 Play-Off Final – has completed a summer transfer to Chesterfield from Swindon Town, whereas former Town loanee centre back Liam Cooper is now also a Chesterfield player.

Other players to keep an eye on that could feature against Town on Saturday include striker Marc Richards, who finished as Chesterfield’s top scorer with 12 goals last season, and robust midfielder Sam Togwell, who made more appearances than any other player.

Town Team News

Town only have defender Anthony Gerrard (calf) and midfielder Anton Robinson (knee) on the sidelines at the moment and it is likely that many members of the First Team squad will get a run-out on Saturday.

Admission information

Town fans can pay on the day for this game, with adult admission priced at £10 with concessions – over-64s and under-19s – at £5.
