OLDHAM PROVIDE FINAL TEST

26 July 2013

Last pre-season run out before season opener

Mark Robins’ men face their final pre-season opponents on Saturday when they travel up the M62 to take on Oldham.

Town has played four First Team friendlies so far with their latest being against Real Betis on Wednesday (click HERE to read the match report).

The match provides Town’s squad with one of their final chances to impressive Robins ahead of the season opening fixture against Nottingham Forest on 3 August.

Oldham – 2012/13 season

The Latics’ form in the FA Cup last season helped paper over the cracks of what was a poor league campaign.

After knocking out Championship side Nottingham Forest, Oldham went one better beating Liverpool 3-2 at Boundary Park. They almost repeated the trick in the next round with a 2-2 draw against Everton before losing 3-1 in the replay.

Despite their impressive run in the Cup, Oldham’s league form was poor and cost Paul Dickov his job in February. He was replaced by Lee Johnson and despite losing four games on the bounce, he recorded three wins out of the last five league games to preserve the Latics’ status in League 1.

Oldham – ones to watch

The Latics helped revive the career of Jose Baxter who was once expected to be the next big thing at Everton.

Baxter failed to fulfil his reported promise at Everton and after a short loan at Tranmere signed for Oldham in July 2012. The attacking midfielder illustrated his potential during Oldham’s FA Cup run and finished the season with 13 league goals in 34 starts.

Another to watch is midfielder Korey Smith who joined the Latics from Norwich this summer. The young midfielder made over 50 starts for the Canaries in five years, but also spent time out on loan.
