ATKINSON SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION

15 January 2013

Academy graduate extends deal until 2014

Midfielder Chris Atkinson has signed a contract extension with Huddersfield Town until the summer of 2014, with the Club having the option of an extra year.

The midfielder’s current deal, which he signed when he turned professional in the 2010/11 season, was due to expire in the summer.

Huddersfield Town Manager Simon Grayson has been delighted at the midfielder’s recent progression.

“Chris was given a great opportunity to showcase his ability at the start of the season on loan at Chesterfield and he grabbed it with both hands.

“He played under two managers who both rated him very highly. His time at Chesterfield prepared him for the step up to the Championship and I have been very pleased with his contribution since his return.

“I am delighted that he has extended his stay with the Club and look forward to working with him as he continues his development.”

After signing his deal, Chris said:

“It is fantastic news – I am over the moon,” he said. “I have been at the Club since I was seven and I am delighted that I am going to be here as it continues to move forward.

“I have learned a lot about the game this season thanks in part to my loan at Chesterfield. I needed to go out and play first team football to continue my development. My time there has stood me in good stead as I continue to learn about the Championship.”

Born in Halifax, Chris joined Town’s Academy aged seven and progressed through the ranks before signing his first professional contract.

He made his debut during the 2010/11 season against Macclesfield before moving out on loan to Darlington for the first part of the 2011/12 season.

Atkinson has rose to prominence this season following a highly successful loan spell at Chesterfield during the first half of the season, where he scored five goals in 15 appearances.

His form earned him a recall into Simon Grayson’s squad and he went on to make his first start of the season against Leeds United, where he scored the opening goal. So far this season the 20 year-old has made six appearances for the Terriers.
