CARSS: WE PUT OUR BODIES ON THE LINE
4 February 2013
Tony Carss was delighted with the bravery Town Under-21’s showed against Sheffield United on Monday afternoon as they recorded their first win of 2013.
In a fiercely contested battle, Matt Crooks proved to be the difference with his goal on 78 minutes.
“It was a very tight game and played in a very difficult conditions – the weather was similar to last week,” said Carss.
“The application and energy of the lads was excellent; especially out of possession when we worked really hard to limit Sheffield United. It was tough in the second half, they had the wind in their backs and had a few chances, but we worked really hard. We put our bodies on the line when we needed to and put in a number of good blocks. When we had the ball we moved it well and passed it nicely; we created a few opportunities, not as many as we would have liked, but considering the conditions we will take what we got.”
Tommy Smith had earlier hit the post in the first half before Crooks gave Town the lead courtesy of good play from Oscar Gobern.
“In the first half last week we had five or six great chances to score, but today was a lot tighter and the one decent chance that we got in the second half, we stuck away. It was a superb finish from Crooksy (Matt).”
Tony continued: “Oscar performed really well last week and he carried that into today’s game. He put in a very good shift defensively and did a lot of screening in front of the back four. His fitness levels are improving all the time and 90 minutes in tough conditions will do him a lot of good as he looks to get back into the first team.”
Carss will now focus on his Under-18’s who are readying for Tuesday night’s FA Youth Cup clash against Nottingham Forest.
“I can’t wait; I am looking forward to it,” said Tony. “We were in on Sunday going through some preparation work and Frankie (Bunn) has done some work with the lads today on set-pieces and we are looking forward to what will be a tough game against Forest.”
