Town defender looks ahead to Ipswich
Huddersfield Town defender Tommy Smith has thanked his teammates for their support since making his league debut at Sheffield Wednesday last month.
The 21 year-old has played 90 minutes in Town’s last three wins and paid tribute to fellow defenders Anthony Gerrard, Joel Lynch and Peter Clarke.
He said: “They are top, top professionals who are always trying to get the best out of their teammates, especially Gerrard. The morale in the camp is very high and we are a close knit group; everyone is pulling in the same direction.
“I am just doing my best for the Club,” he continued. “The Captain is a great figure and is loved by everyone; I respect him more than anyone. He has been brilliant with me and has supported me over the last couple of weeks. I haven’t felt any added pressure; I have just stepped in and done my best.
“The Manager, the staff and all the players have shown a lot of faith in me recently, which has been a big confidence boost.”
Tommy’s first three games have seen him travel on the road twice with the Terriers and he is looking forward to another trip this Saturday.
“The last few weeks have been brilliant and something that I didn’t expect to happen,” he told htafc.com. “It couldn’t have gone any better with the team picking up three wins out of three; hopefully we can continue that trend at Ipswich on Saturday.
“I get nervous before any game, but I was probably a little more than normal at Sheffield Wednesday. Hillsborough is a fantastic place to play football and the atmosphere was great, but once the game started I settled down quickly.”
Town’s clean sheet at Bolton was its first in eleven matches – one that Alex Smithies was deserving of according to the defender.
“He has been brilliant this season. We have found clean sheets difficult to come by, but I felt we deserved them against Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley. We played really well in both those games and it was frustrating not to keep them out.”
Tommy continued: “We are full of confidence and are looking forward to taking on Ipswich. Like with all the teams in the Championship, they will pose us different threats, but we are playing well and will take them on.”
Tickets are available until 4pm Friday at the Stadium and are available on the day at Portman Road, but prices will increase – click HERE for more information.
