Holmes nets again in draw at Canalside
A 14th goal of the season from midfielder Duane Holmes gave Town’s Under-18 side a 1-1 draw against visitors Sheffield United at Canalside Sports Complex in the Professional Development League this morning.
Town took the lead in the 65th minute after dispossessing the visitors inside their half. Striker Paul Mullin got hold of the ball and slipped a pass through to top scorer Holmes, who made no mistake with a neat first-time finish past United’s ‘keeper.
Sadly Town conceded with United pressing hard with just six minutes to go, but Professional Development Coach Frankie Bunn took the positives from the game.
“Our players were disappointed not to win the game and I think that shows how far we have come as a team and individuals. We’re disappointed not to beat a Club like Sheffield United, which is a long-standing successful Academy, and that’s a great reflection of what we have achieved this year.”
The young Terriers currently sit third in the Under-18 Professional Development League 2 and are targeting one of the top two positions to be involved in the end of season Play-Offs against the Southern section, but Bunn believes their recent impressive run may mean opposing teams setup differently now.
“We didn’t move the ball as well as we like, but we came up against a different proposition as Sheffield sat off us. We haven’t come across that this season, but people will see we are third in the League and will take notice of it.
“The lads are working extremely hard; even the boys who have been told they won’t be given a professional contract are still producing.”
