EYRE ON WIGAN COMEBACK

8 April 2013

Steve delighted with second half showing

Town’s second half showing against Wigan in Monday’s U21 match gave Steve Eyre something to be pleased about following a poor first display from his team.

The Terriers went in at half-time two goals down but hit back with a quick fire double courtesy of Lee Novak to salvage a point.

“We battled, tackled and passed the ball well in the second 45, which we didn’t do in the first half,” said Steve. “We were slow off the mark and were caught cold by Wigan who came out firing. We are better when we play with intensity and we didn’t do that in the first half.

“We had chances to score before we actually did with Jordan Sinnott going close. As a group we needed to be higher up the pitch, though, and that was something that worked for us in the second half. We were excellent in the second half and I believe we should have gone on to win the game.”

Israel Johnson provided the catalyst for Town’s revival and Steve was delighted with the midfielder’s cameo.

“He is a very fit young man who is a destructive type of player,” said Steve. “Wigan were getting too many passes away in midfield so we bought Israel on to try and prevent that happening. His work for the penalty was superb and a bonus. We felt he would put a bit of steal into our midfield and allow Chris Atkinson to get forward and Jordan Sinnott to get his passing going. Jordan’s passing all game was superb; he is a massively talented footballer.”
