Atkinson scores as Higginbotham gets assist
Town’s three players out on loan enjoyed a productive weekend at their respective clubs.
In npower League 2, young central midfielder Chris Atkinson scored the only goal of the game to give the Spireites a fantastic first win in four games at Aldershot. The Academy graduate broke through the defensive line before calmly stroking the ball past the home custodian in the second-half to notch his second goal in just six starts and told Chesterfield’s official website:
"You think it's going to be another one of those days, but we stuck in till the end today. There's no better feeling [than scoring], all the fans were going mad in the corner. I ran straight over to them, it was a fantastic feeling.
"I absolutely love it here. The lads are fantastic and I’m playing every week, which is the main thing."
Town teammate Liam Ridehalgh also played 90 minutes for Chesterfield at left back during the 1-0 win – the 10th appearance of his loan spell.
Chesterfield are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to npower League 1 outfit Doncaster Rovers in Johnstone’s Paint Trophy action.
Meanwhile, Town’s Kallum Higginbotham made his first start for loan club Carlisle United on the right wing during their excellent 2-1 win at Walsall in npower League 1. Playing 84 minutes, he set up the Cumbrians’ first goal – with his cross being converted by the head of former Town loanee Joe Garner.
Greg Abbott’s side host high-flying Notts County in their next competitive fixture on Saturday.
