Joining the Terriers as an Assistant Coach, 46-year-old German Thomas Kleine is also a UEFA Pro Licence holder having turned his hand to coaching after hanging up his boots following over 300 appearances in Germany’s top two divisions as a centre half. Turning out in the Bundesliga and Champions League for Bayer Lerverkusen, Kleine then captained Greuther Fürth for four seasons, barely missing a game before signing with Bundesliga side Hannover 96 in 2007. Two years with Borussia Mönchengladbach followed before a return to Greuther Fürth to end his playing days, with his coaching career beginning at the same club.
Manager of their second team between 2015 to 2017, Thomas then joined Fortuna Düsseldorf as Assistant Coach between 2017 to 2022, contributing to their Bundesliga promotion in the 2017/18 season. Having crossed paths in Germany on opposing sides, this will be Kleine’s first time working directly within Breitenreiter’s staff.
