REPORT: GRIMSBY 3-6 TOWN B

4 November 2020

A late flurry of goals helped the Young Terriers to victory

- Town B were victorious against Grimsby in the Central League Cup
- Dominant second half performance from Young Terriers
- Goals from Phillips, Rowe, Brown, Headley and Daly

Huddersfield Town B recorded a resounding 6-3 victory over Grimsby Town in the Central League Cup at Blundell Park.

A late flurry of goals alongside a dominant second half performance helped the Young Terriers to victory on the East coast.

Town started the game the brightest and created multiple chances in the opening five minutes.

After just 16 seconds striker Kieran Phillips struck the inside of the post having been played through well by Aaron Rowe. Two minutes later Phillips teed up Jaheim Headley inside the box, but the winger's powerful shot skidded narrowly wide of the bottom right corner.

The Young Terriers’ dominance paid off as they took the lead in the 20th minute through Aaron Rowe. He was played down the right by Demeaco Duhaney, went on an excellent run and beat the ‘keeper from a tight angle.

Grimsby equalised just seven minutes later, however, as Luke Spokes struck from distance after some good play from Cameron Painter.

Town came close to regaining their lead just two minutes before half-time. Phillips drove at the Grimsby defence before slipping through Rowe inside the box. The winger’s first-time shot was saved well by Olli Battersby.

The hosts began the second half quickly and went ahead in the 48th minute. Ben Jackson pulled down Jackson Jr inside the box before the Grimsby man coolly converted the spot kick.

That didn’t deter the youngsters who stuck to their game plan and soon won a spot kick of their own! A marauding run from Jaden Brown at left-back resulted in the defender being tripped inside the box by Duncan Idehen. After being fouled, the youngster stepped up to take the penalty but saw his effort saved to the keeper's right! He reacted quickest, though, to poke home the rebound.

Town regained the lead just after the hour mark through Phillips after an impressive long pass by Joel Pereira. The young striker took the ball down well on the edge of the box and held off a defender before curling a right footed shot into top right corner.

The Terriers’ ‘keeper continued his strong performance by producing a fine reaction save to deny Alhagi Touray Sisay from close range to keep Danny Schofield’s side ahead.

Town added their fourth in the 83rd minute. Jaheim Headley found space in the box and slid a shot under the goalkeeper.

Five minutes later and it was five! Headley this time turned provider as he teed up Daly inside the box. The attacking midfielder, who came on as a substitute in the Sky Bet Championship defeat to Bristol City yesterday, curled his first time shot around the defender and into the right side of the goal with precision.

The Young Terriers continued their late flurry of goals as that man Phillips scored his second of the game to make it six! A long ball over the top found the striker inside the box who slotted the ball past the ‘keeper with ease.

Grimsby managed to get a goal back in the 93rd minute as Alhagi Toure Sisay turned his defender well before scoring a one-on-one chance, but it was another good outing for Huddersfield Town’s B Team!
