Academy Manager Leigh Bromby reviews U19 game against South Shields

- Huddersfield Town’s Under-19s beat South Shields
- Goals from Kit Elliott and Sam Sharrock-Peplow
- Comments from Academy Manager Leigh Bromby

Huddersfield Town’s Academy Manager Leigh Bromby was thrilled with what the Young Terriers got out of the game against South Shields.

Town’s Under-19s beat the Evo-Stik Premier Division side 2-0 away from home thanks to goals from Kit Elliott and Sam Sharrock-Peplow, in a game that showed how Town’s youngsters have progressed physically.

Dean Whitehead’s side, that faced the men’s non-league team, included a number of players who have progressed up from last year’s Under-17 set-up.

Huddersfield Town’s Academy Manager Leigh Bromby explained how the youngsters were able to adapt to the increased physicality.

“Last night we had 17-year-olds playing against men and performing really well against a good South Shields team.

“We’ve had success from the youngsters because we’ve put them into these situations, where they have different challenges, which sometimes results in losing games. But the players know regardless of winning or losing the objective is to improve as individuals.

“They came out of the game yesterday really, really well because they dealt with the challenge in front of them and that’s because last year they had difficult, physical games playing against men’s teams like Pontefract. These experiences are important for them as they now understand why they are doing it.”

Another situation that the Young Terriers are starting to get to grips with is playing in front of a crowd.

“The facilities were excellent, and I think there were over 400 fans there, which is something else they had to adapt to,” said Bromby.

“It was a great challenge and it was helped that the facilities were so good. The pitch was outstanding.

“It was a really good performance, some really good individual performances and a really positive evening.”

Alongside a different test for the youngsters, the game also strengthened the connection between Town and South Shields.

“It was a really good game and created another positive relationship with a non-league club where our players could potentially go on loan.”

Over the summer a number of Town’s Academy players have been training with Jan Siewert’s First Team.

Bromby explained how that’s helped drive on some youngsters and changed their mindsets.

“We’ve had a real impact on the First Team, so we’ve had 11 players who have regularly trained with the First Team and been involved in games.

“Our players have had a lot of minutes and we shortened the break for the young lads over the summer because we thought this would happen.

“For us, it’s been really positive to have an impact on the First Team and to support the First Team; it’s great to see players like Rarmani (Edmonds-Green), Lewis (O’Brien) and Ryan (Schofield) have a natural impact.

“Seeing that gives other youngsters a positive outlook because they know there’s a chance; that’s huge for this environment and what the players believe in.”
