Young Terriers’ first game in Italy abandoned due to bad weather

- Heavy rain causes Young Terriers’ game against Atalanta to be called off
- Mark Hudson’s side competed for 40 minutes against Italian side

A sudden, heavy down pour of rain put paid to Huddersfield Town’s Under-19s game against Atalanta just outside of Milan.

This was the first of two scheduled games for Mark Hudson’s Young Terriers as they compete against two top-level sides from mainland Europe.

The referee began the game at the Centro Sportivo Bortolotti, just outside Milan, and the Town youngsters started well. They kept the ball excellently in the opening 15 minutes and had a penalty claim turned down.

Kit Elliott released a ball into the pathway of Dom Tear, who’s heels were clipped, but Dom stayed on his feet and no penalty was awarded.

Tear, who was named as Town’s Academy Player of the Year, continued to cause problems. This time, centre-back Harry Spratt started an attack with a great switch of play and the move ended in the winger forcing the home ‘keeper into a low save.

Town’s other winger, Olly Dyson, was the next to try his luck. The youngsters fired a fierce effort goalwards from a narrow angle, 20 yards out, which zipped just over the bar.

Despite the early chances, the Young Terriers were behind in the 35th minute. An Atalanta striker latched on to a through ball and coolly slotted an effort past Ryan Schofield.

However, in the 40th minute the game against Atalanta was abandoned. The weather conditions got worse as a sudden, heavy down pour of rain gave the referee no choice, but to call off the game.

Mark Hudson’s Young Terriers will now prepare for a match against Udinese’s Under-19s side on Wednesday at the Viale Agostino ed Angeli Candolini, 3pm UK.
