Huddersfield Town Under 19s draw 2-2 against Farsley Celtic at home

Huddersfield Town’s U19s played out a 2-2 draw against Farsley Celtic at the Millers Oils High Performance Complex.

Following their defeat last weekend, a more experienced Under 19s side took to the pitch today, which resulted in them bouncing back and securing a draw against Farsley Celtic this afternoon.

The relatively even game saw Dan Vost score following a corner from Michael Stone to equalise early in the first half as well as Conor Falls’ goal in the second half to, again, level the scoreline, and ultimately secure the draw for the Young Terriers.

The first goal from the opposition came in the sixth minute after good counter-attack play meant that their man by the back post was able to beat our defence and slot it into the back of the net unmarked, and they took an early lead.

However, Town’s youngsters got straight back into the game and scored their first goal in the ninth minute - the movement started as Cian Philpott broke down the right and squared the ball to Falls in the box, but his shot was tipped over the bar by the Farsley Celtic ‘keeper. Michael Stone stepped up to take the set piece and Vost skilfully headed it across the ‘keeper and into the back of the net to see both goals scored within the first 10 minutes of the half.

Charles Ondo had a good first half as he tried to create as many opportunities to score as he could as well as having a shot himself – he created a chance through good play between himself and Falls down the left side, before he sent a low cross into the box and found the feet of Falls, but his shot was read well and saved. Ondo fancied his chances towards the end of the first half from a narrow angle, but the ball hit the side netting.

The visitors opened the scoring again early in the second half after their winger beat Archie Sheppard to the ball and looped it over Michael Acquah, who had come off his line to collect the ball, in the 47th minute.

Our Young Terriers went level again in the 63rd minute as Falls scored a great goal from close range after Charles sent a low cross into the box and Falls turned onto it and knocked it into the bottom corner – Michael Stone made the initial pass forward and pushed the players up the pitch.

Falls almost scored twice more late on in the second half as he looked to put the team ahead – the ‘keeper came out and read the situation well and saved the first attempt. The second opportunity came in the 88th minute after the Northern Ireland U19 international was crossed a low ball by Joseph Johnson, he turned and shot but the Farsley ‘keeper reacted well and made the save.

Our first goalscorer this afternoon, Dan Vost, coomented after the match:

“I think we played well; it was hard going behind at the start, but the boys had a good mentality to bring it back and then same in the second half. But overall, we should have put the game to bed at the start, but it was tough to get back into the game.

“It was my first start of 2023, and it was good to get out there and score and get the team back in the game after going behind.

“We knew it was going to be a different type of game, normally we know the opposition and the teams that we play against but from the first whistle they had bags of energy, and we knew it was going to be tough to play against. We just had to get a hold of the game and take control.

“Our plan for the second half was to keep it in their half and push them back. We had all the chances; it was just unlucky we didn’t get that goal but that’s what we want to play like - we want to be pushing teams back and obviously keeping control.

‘I like to be a leader on the pitch, I like to demand a lot. Even when I’m playing with people older than me, I like to take control and set the tempo of the game.”
