DANAHER PREVIEWS THURSDAY'S FA YOUTH CUP GAME

30 November 2022

Young Terriers play at the John Smith’s Stadium in FA Youth Cup on Thursday

- Huddersfield Town Under-19s back in action on Thursday
- Young Terriers host Ipswich Town in the FA Youth Cup
- £5 Adults and £2 Concessions for the fixture

Huddersfield Town’s Under-19 side play at the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday 1 December, when they welcome Ipswich Town in the FA Youth Cup; noon kick-off.

Our youngsters enter their FA Youth Cup at the Third Round just like our First Team do due to Town being in the Sky Bet Championship.

Ipswich Town were victorious over Bromley FC in their Second Round fixture last weekend in order to qualify for the Third Round tie against our Young Terriers.

Under-19s Coach, George Danaher, previewed this game:

George started by talking about how much the youngsters can gain by playing at the John Smith's Stadium in front of fans.

“Throughout the Academy, we try to provide the players with a large range of experiences.

“I think this competition is the first experience they come across that relates to a First Team game really.

“It will help them understand what it’s like to play in the stadium and, hopefully what it’s like playing in front of some fans and just help their overall development.

“I think playing in the stadium adds a bit of pressure, but as we all know in First Team football there is that pressure to win.

“The players that perform the best will probably deal with that pressure and make good decisions in high pressure moments. We will assess after the game on what they did right.”

Our Under-19 Coach explained how much the players look forward to playing in the competition.

“I think it’s a great competition that the lads look forward to every year.

“Somebody told me the other day that the Club hasn't progressed past this round in six years, so it would be a good achievement.

“It’s a competition that provides a different type of pressure and challenge and that is something as a Club and an Academy we like to do, give the players a really high challenge but then support them to help them develop and progress.

“However, I am under no illusion as a coach - my aim is to develop the players that are capable of playing in the B Team and then progress to the First Team.

“It has always been the goal to develop players to impact our First Team and that is something that I think our Academy players have done really well this season.

Danaher then touched on what training has been like while preparing for the FA Youth Cup game:

“Training has been good! The training ground has been quiet (with the First Team in Marbella) but it has allowed us to be able to prepare for the game properly.

“We have been able to do a lot of 11v11 tactical practices, which is something that helps before games.

“For me, the prep is always similar. We want to focus on ourselves, and want to show what we do everyday in and out of possession.

“We aim to obviously win the game, but to win the game in the same style and spirit we normally would.”

Finally George spoke about what he was expecting from Ipswich in this upcoming game.

“Ipswich will be a good side. From recent results they can definitely score goals.

“I think we’re in for a challenging game, but hopefully a game that the players can get through successfully.”

Supporters can attend the noon kick-off at the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday 1 December to see how our Terriers of the future get on!

FA YOUTH CUP REPORT: TOWN 2-3 IPSWICH

1 December 2022

Town's youngsters knocked out of the FA Youth Cup

- Huddersfield Town youngsters lose to Ipswich Town
- Hazeem Bakre and Tom Iorpenda scored in the first half
- Young Terriers will not progress in the FA Youth Cup

The Huddersfield Town youngsters suffered a frustrating afternoon at the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday afternoon, losing 2-3 to Ipswich Town in the FA Youth Cup.

Despite going into half time winning 2-0, the Young Terriers couldn’t stop Ipswich Town coming back in the second half to take it to extra time, which then allowed the visitors to take the lead towards the end of the extra 30 minutes.

The action started quickly in the game with Town’s first chance coming in the second minute as Fope Deru kept possession well and sent a through ball to find Hazeem Bakre onside, who unselfishly tried to square the ball Hakeem Sandah, but the last defender then managed to get a foot in and clear the chance.

Our first goal came in the third minute of the game after Deru got the ball down the left side and sent a great cross towards Cian Philpott in the area. Although the initial shot from Philpott was blocked, the ball fell to Bakre in the box, and he scored the rebound with his left foot!

As Ipswich tried to find their equaliser, Finley Barbrook took the ball into the Town box following a throw in, he continued to drive it close to the net, but Freddie Fletcher threw his body in the way and blocked the shot.

A second chance for the Tractor Boys to equalise came in the 15th minute after Nico Valentine and Osman Foyo played a good one-two as they worked to get closer to the area. Foyo fancied his chances and shot from the edge of the box, but this went high and over the bar.

Ash Botswain came closest to equalising for Ipswich in the first 30 minutes after a cross sent into the box meant that there was space for him to jump for the header, but this went just wide of the post.

This was shortly followed by another Ipswich chance after Foyo advanced the Town area after he span Daniel Vost, he then crossed the ball to Finley Barbrook, who shot from inside the box, but this was comfortably saved by Sam Taylor.

Botswain had his second chance in 10 minutes after he was crossed the ball in the box, it found it his head, but Taylor reacted quickly and saved the close-range chance.

Town’s second goal came in the 35th minute as Tom Iorpenda doubled the lead from range just outside the box after he was found in space by Deru.

Deru tried his luck after a nice hook from Joseph Johnson meant he could step infield from the left, he tried to curl the ball inside the far post, but it drifted just wide.

The last action of the first half came in the 45th minute after Bakre was fouled on the right side of the box. Vost delivered the free kick into the area, and it found the head Sandah but went well over the bar.

The second half saw Ipswich come back out brighter as they pushed the Town defence and fought to get back in the game.

An early shot from Ipswich’s Foyo in the 47th minute got a deflection, but Taylor adjusted well and made the save to keep his side in front.

Ipswich were awarded a free kick 25 yards out from the Town goal after Finn Steele was fouled by Sandah, and the set piece was taken by captain Paul Moodie. He curled a decent effort just past the right post of Taylor’s goal.

Our visitors got their first goal back in the 58th minute after great individual play from Nico Valentine, which allowed him to get himself into space and score the first goal for the Tractor Boys.

Iorpenda tried to get the two lead advantage back and tried his luck from range after good hold-up play from Bakre, but his shot was saved easily by Woody Williamson.

Town had a great chance after Sandah picked up the ball and moved it right to Philpott, who then sent it back to Hakeem in the penalty area, but Williamson managed to deflect the shot wide.

The Tractor Boys found their equaliser in the 74th minute as Finley Barbrook headed home a free kick, which was delivered by Harry Barbrook.

Not wanting to go behind, Town went on the attack as Johnson clipped the ball to Bakre, who then turned past two Ipswich men, only for this to be cleared from behind by the defender.

This was followed by a big chance for Ipswich after Johnson lost possession and Botswain received the ball inside the area, but he got his shot wrong and fired well wide of the target.

Ipswich were awarded a penalty in the 89th minute after substitute Temi Okuwa tripped Rio Morgan in the area. Taylor responded well to Gerrard Buabo’s spot kick and dove full length to his left to push the ball out for a corner.

A late chance before extra time came for Town to win the game as Cian Philpott span brilliantly past Harry Barbrook to get into the area, but Williamson saved this effort – and the Youth FA Cup game went into extra time.

The only chance of the first half of extra time came in the minute after good play from the Ipswich sub, Oli Davis, meant he could beat two players and ran into the Town area, but the low cross he sent dissected the two teammates and rolled to safety.

Ipswich scored in the 109th minute to come back from being 2-0 down as Foyo headed his side in front – however he then received a second yellow card for taking his shirt off in celebration his team played the rest of the game with 10 men.

That would be the last action of the game and it ended in heartbreak for our youngsters at the John Smith's Stadium.
