YOUNG TERRIERS IN CUP QUARTER-FINAL ACTION

25 February 2021

George Danaher’s side to host Walsall

- Under-17s in EFL Youth Alliance Cup Quarter-Final
- Youngsters host Walsall on Saturday 27 February 2021
- Young Terriers looking to progress to next stage of competition

Huddersfield Town’s Under-17s are in EFL Youth Alliance Cup Quarter-Final action on Saturday (27 February 2021) when they host Walsall at Canalside.

The Young Terriers finished top of the Group B table, with four points. Their Youth Alliance Cup run so far this season has seen them draw 3-3 with Blackpool and showcase an energetic performance to beat Fleetwood Town 5-0!

Their opponents finished top of Group C with three points having beaten Burton Albion 3-1 and lost to Mansfield 2-1.

Whilst the two sides haven’t met yet this season, their Under-19 teammates have! Town walked away victorious on both occasions, with 3-2 and 5-2 wins.

The Young Terriers come into the game off the back of a 6-1 win over Barnsley, which sees them through to the knockout stages of the Clarets Cup. Speaking after the match, Under-17s Coach George Danaher was quick to comment on his side’s performance.

“It was excellent.

“I think it’s been long overdue; the boys have been performing really well in recent games and it just seemed to click.

“I put a bit of demand on the team to win the game and they all showed the right mentality and character going into the game to want to win and that showed.”

Danaher went on to mention the importance of Cup games for the Under-17s.

“Cup games are massive. They give the players a great experience of having to win and there being pressure on that.

“There’ll be tweaks made ahead of the Walsall game, but again it’s a cup game that all the players and the staff are looking forward to.

“As staff we’ll create the pressure and the environments that make the players know it’s a big game and they must win.

“It’ll be an exciting one!”

YOUNG TERRIERS PROGRESS TO YOUTH ALLIANCE CUP SEMI-FINALS

28 February 2021

George Danaher’s side put seven past Walsall in Quarter-Final

- Young Terriers showcase excellent performance to win against Walsall
- Goals from Conor Falls, Etienne Camara, Pat Jones (x2) and Brahima Diarra (x3)
- Win sees them progress to EFL Youth Alliance Cup Semi Finals

The Young Terriers progressed to the Semi-Finals of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup with an emphatic 7-1 victory against Walsall on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was tight as both sides looked defensively sound, allowing little in terms of chances either way, but it was Town who took a one goal advantage into the break after Conor Falls tucked a shot away midway through the half.

A frantic start to the second half then saw four goals in little over five minutes, as Danaher’s side raced into a comfortable lead.

Etienne Camara doubled Town’s advantage from close range after the restart, prodding in after the visitors failed to clear a corner. However, this didn’t last long as the Walsall pulled one back instantly.

The Young Terriers responded positively to this setback though, and within four minutes of conceding Pat Jones had restored the two-goal lead with a fine finish from the edge of the area and added another from a similar position to increase the advantage.

Brahima Diarra got in on the act in the final 30 minutes with a variety of well taken chances as he scored his first hat-trick for the Club.

For his first the midfielder made a smart run to get on the end of Falls’ deep corner and head in at the far post.

His next two then each displayed his individual brilliance, as the Frenchman found the top-left corner from outside the box before dribbling past three opponents before coolly finishing across goal for his second and third goals.

This took the score line to 7-1 and secured a well-deserved victory for the Young Terriers. It also sets up a Semi-Final encounter against Grimsby Town in the next stage of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup, with a date and venue to be confirmed in due course.

Next up for George Danaher’s side is a return to league action when they travel to Scunthorpe next Saturday (6 March 2021).
