Young Terriers struggle with physical battle against Rotherham United

- Town’s Under-17s learn from defeat against Rotherham United
- Young Terriers begin next six-week coaching programme
- Academy Manager Leigh Bromby explains next step for youngsters

Huddersfield Town’s Under-17s group began its second six week block of coaching ahead of the Youth Alliance fixture away at Rotherham United.

After working on the basics of the Terriers Identity for the first month and a half at the Club, the Young Terriers made the next step in learning about the Huddersfield Town system as they were slowly introduced to ‘fight zones’ and playing in the final third.

When reviewing the game, Leigh Bromby was happy with how the youngsters took what they learnt on to the pitch, despite a defeat on the afternoon.

“We started a new block of coaching with the youngsters ahead of their second game as we continue to introduce them further to the Terriers Identity and a new style.

“We’ve been working on trying to play the game in the opposition’s half, whilst also showing the basics of our identity, so playing out from the back etc.

“It was the first time they’d done this in a game situation and there were some good examples of it.

“They struggled a couple of times with balls in behind and with how high the line was, but we will keep revisiting these and at the end of the six-week block, we will hopefully see big improvements with that.

“We always play out from the back, but what else we’ve done is tried to concentrate on how to use the ball in the attacking third. That’s where we’ve struggled a bit because the lads are still getting to know the system.

“We try to use these matches as an extension of training.”

The Under-17s currently compete in the Under-18 Youth Alliance league, testing themselves against older opposition so the matches provide more of a physical stimulus.

“In the second half we struggled with the physicality and they put a lot of balls into the box but that’s a reason why we value this programme because we get that physical challenge,” said Bromby.

“All the players have seen improvements both individually and as a team because of this and the themed training programmes.”
