Scunthorpe United’s strong U23 side win at Canalside
- Huddersfield Town U19s play latest Central League Cup game
- A strong Scunthorpe United side records a deserved win
- One win and one defeat in the competition for the Young Terriers
Huddersfield Town’s Under-19 side faced a tough task at Canalside on Wednesday afternoon against a Scunthorpe United team featuring several members of their League 2 team.
Jon Worthington’s youngsters fought hard against the Iron, but three goals in the second half gave the visitors a well-deserved win.
Striker Olufela Olomola, 23, netted one of the goals – he’s made nearly 100 First Team appearances at league level – whilst the other goals came from German striker Kenan Dünnwald-Turan, winger Devarn Green and former Dundee winger Andy Dales.
The efforts of centre backs Tom Bamford and, in particular, captain Mustapha Olagunju, who made several superb blocks and enjoyed a good battle with Olomola, kept the Iron at bay until the first goal came in the 39th minute, when 25-year-old Dales hit a shot from 20 yards that was deflected past Town ‘keeper Nicholas Bilokapic.
Former Southport winger Green doubled the advantage just after half-time with a fierce shot from a narrow angle that beat the Australian at his near post, before Olomola made a one-on-one look easy to make it three minutes later.
Dünnwald-Turan netted from another clear opportunity with just under 10 minutes remaining, either side of which the Young Terriers had their best chances; substitute striker Andre Edionhon firing over from inside the area before Jaheim Headley pushed an effort wide when well positioned in the penalty area.
The lively Will McCamley, Gully Zunda and substitute Myles Bright kept plugging away, but couldn’t find a consolation goal before full-time.
With this defeat adding to the earlier win against Walsall Reserves in the competition, it’s all to play for in the Central League Cup, with the next game scheduled at Grimsby Town on 4 November.
