REPORT: TOWN 1-0 SHEFFIELD UNITED

4 May 2023

Town secure Sky Bet Championship place for next season

- Huddersfield Town 1-0 Sheffield United
- Danny Ward scored winner in second half
- Town secure place in Sky Bet Championship next season

A vital Sky Bet Championship win this evening against Sheffield United secured safety for next season with one game to go, meaning Neil Warnock achieved what he came here to do in front of 20,172 Town fans!

A great Danny Ward goal in the second half secured the three points for Town on Thursday evening, meaning Town were safe and will be in the Sky Bet Championship next season.

The Blades had their first shot in the fourth minute as Iliman Ndiaye skipped through the inside and shot, but Michał Helik got down quickly and made a brilliant block – this allowed Lee Nicholls to gather the ball comfortably.

Another Nicholls save closely followed when Daniel Jebbison went clean through one-on-one with our ‘keeper, but he stood tall and denied the Sheffield United chance.

Town were awarded a free kick in their attacking half after the Blades captain John Egan pulled Josh Koroma down when he had skilfully skipped past him with the ball and was heading further towards the goal.

A chance for Sheffield United to take the lead came just before the half hour mark as Jebbison was free in the centre of the box as the ball went high for him to head but this fired over the bar.

The last chance of the first half for it to finish all square came from Sander Berge, who tried from range, but it was read well by Nicholls, and he made the save by the side of the post to keep the score equal.

Our Terriers started the second half in great spirits with amazing effort, and in the first five minutes of the restart Matty Pearson had a great chance to head the ball into the back of the net from Jack Rudoni corner, but this was cleared off the line to keep the score level.

Wes Foderingham made a great diving save in the 55th minute and denied Josh Koroma’s shot from a narrow angle, it was a great reaction from Town in the second half.

A free kick led to another Pearson chance after David Kasumu was fouled in the attacking half. Our defender headed back across the box towards the goal, but Foderingham gathered the ball above his head.

Ward scored our winning goal in the 59th minute as he spun his man with his back to the goal from a throw in and fired it home with his left foot from outside the box into the bottom right corner.

Not long after this Kasumu hit the ball into the side netting with Koroma setting him up on a great break and sent him through to have his shot.

In order to keep Sheffield United out of the net, Ward dove and headed the Blades corner clear and kept Town with a goal lead.

The John Smith’s Stadium was deafening at full time with all 20,172 fans making as much noise as possible as the players did their lap of thanks around the pitch, followed by a guard of honour from the lads for Neil Warnock and Ronnie Jepson – the atmosphere was incredible.
