Town's final away trip of the 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship season

The Terriers will continue their 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship campaign on Sunday 30 April in South Wales where they will take on Cardiff City; noon kick-off in their final away fixture of the season.

Town will be looking for more of the same after defeating Cardiff in the reverse fixture back in September. An early goal from Jordan Rhodes sent the visitors home empty handed and gave Town their second win of the season.

THE OPPOSITION

Cardiff City currently sit 18th in the table after beating Rotherham United 2-1 away from home in midweek. Cardiff are currently managed by Sabri Lamouchi after they parted with former Town player Mark Hudson as Head Coach.

Lamouchi has previous experience of the Championship, managing Nottingham Forest from July 2019 to October 2020, narrowly missing out on the Play-Offs in the 2019/20 season.

ONES TO WATCH

Sory Kaba

Joining on loan from FC Midtjylland in January, the striker has had a huge impact. Becoming Cardiff’s top goal scorer in just 15 appearances with eight goals and one assist. Kaba has scored seven goals in his last 10 games, as well as assisting against Swansea. This has helped Cardiff win four and draw two of those games. The 28-year-old has 102 appearances for his parent club, scoring 26 times and assisting 15 times.

Perry Ng

The right back signed for the Bluebirds in January 2021 from Crewe Alexandra on a three-and-a-half-year deal. From 2004, Perry spent 10 years rising through the Crewe Alexandra academy before signing his first professional contract. The 26-year-old was named Alexandra’s captain in 2019 and was included in the PFA League Two Team of the Year for 2019/20. Perry has made 42 appearances this season, scoring and assisting twice each.

Ryan Wintle

Defensive midfielder Ryan Wintle has made 43 appearances this season, scoring two goals and assisting three times. He has also captained the side a number of times. Wintle joined Cardiff in 2021 from Crewe Alexandra where he made 186 appearances, after joining from Blackpool. The Englishman has 84 appearances in the Championship across two seasons.

Town win for the first time at the Cardiff City Stadium

An important Sky Bet Championship game against Cardiff City saw Town take home all three points thanks to second half goals from half-time substitute Joe Hungbo and Matty Pearson!

A crucial game for the Terriers at the Cardiff City Stadium saw Lee Nicholls return to the starting line-up after a lengthy injury. Town created some brilliant chances and take a 0-2 lead in the second half due to goals from Joe Hungbo and Matty Pearson, as well the confidence from our travelling supporters, Town were victorious in securing all three away points.

Town started as they meant to go on with an early chance in the second minute on the counter-attack as Jaheim Headley was sent down the left wing and crossed the ball into Brahima Diarra inside the box, the young midfielder cut the ball back to Danny Ward and the striker shot from the centre of the box. His shot forced a great save out of Jak Alnwick, who denied Town the lead.

The Bluebirds were forced to make an early change as Kion Etete was replaced by Sory Kaba in the 13th minute after he picked up a knock.

A good spell from Town forced our hosts to sit deep in their own half and resulted in multiple crosses put into the box, however, Cardiff City defended well and blocked the crosses.

Jaden Philogene fancied his chances once he had sight of goal and shot from well outside the Town area, but this shot went well high and wide and went out for a Town goal kick.

Shortly after this, Cardiff City found another chance to break, which lead to a shot from Romaine Sawyers from the edge of the box, bit this also fired high over bar of Nicholls' goal.

The Terriers had a chance through Jack Rudoni blocked by Sawyers at the other end of the pitch after Brahima Diarra sent a great pass to Jaheim Headley in the box, who knocked it to Rudoni, but Cardiff produced a great block.

A huge chance for Cardiff came in the 40th minute as Philogene tried to chip Nicholls, but the ball hit the side netting.

The last chance for either side in the first half fell to Josh Koroma as he shot from a narrow angle – Alnwick stood strong and made the save, which meant the second half began goalless.

The second half saw Hunbgo come on for Diarra at half time, he then scored his first away goal for the Terriers in the 61st minute after a great spell of play. Rudoni stole the ball from Sawyers, which meant Hungbo could run onto the ball inside the box – he then carried further into the centre and finished in the top corner.

Pearson made it two less than 10 minutes later – in the 69th minute Pearson scored his sixth goal of the season. Rudoni crossed the ball into the box and found the head of our defender by the far post and he nodded it home.

Town almost made it three in the 76th minute as Josh Koroma and Headley both hit the woodwork. Koroma ran the ball into the box and struck in space, but the ball hit the post and deflected back to Headley, who’s attempt hit the bar.

Cardiff City got a goal back in the 83rd minute from Isaak Davies following a corner. The corner was played short to the edge of the box and then played through for Davies to knock into the back of the Town net.

As they tried to find their equaliser, Philogene shot from outside the box, but this went well wide of the Town goal.

Great save from Nicholls on his return from injury as Ruben Colwill’s shot from outside the box was heading into the top right corner, but this was put round the post for a corner ball.

Despite an intense five minutes of injury time, Town leave Cardiff with all three points to take back to Huddersfield.
