Huddersfield Town return to Sky Bet Championship action following the international break with a trip to the MKM Stadium to take on Hull City on Friday 1 April 2022; 7:45pm kick-off.

Town come into the game looking to get back to winning ways following the defeat to Bournemouth last time out at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Hull City will also be looking to bounce back from defeat after losing 1-3 at home to Luton Town before the international break.

THE OPPOSITION

Following their promotion from Sky Bet League One last season, Hull City currently occupy 20th spot in the Championship with 41 points from 39 games.

Despite achieving promotion with the Tigers last season, Grant McCann was replaced by new manager Shota Arveladze in January 2022.

Since Arveladze’s arrival at the MKM stadium, Hull City have won three of the 12 games he has overseen, including a 0-2 victory against Coventry City.

Hull City will be looking to avenge the 2-0 defeat from October 2021 at the John Smith’s Stadium when Town arrive at the MKM Stadium on Friday evening.

ONES TO WATCH

Ryan Longman

After arriving on loan from Brighton in the summer, Longman completed a permanent switch to Hull during the January transfer window. With the ability to play on the left and right side of midfield, Longman has been a threat in attacking areas for Hull this season with eight goal contributions from his 28 appearances. Since Alveladze’s arrival at the club, Longman has played almost all of his minutes out on the right-hand side. His ability to come inside and use his left foot is one of his strengths, evidenced by his long-range curler in the 2-3 FA Cup defeat to Everton back in January.

Richie Smallwood

Having signed for Hull City at the beginning of the 2020/21 season, Smallwood has gone on to make over 60 appearances in under two full seasons for the Tigers. The former Rotherham and Blackburn Rovers man has missed only four games so far this season and has captained the side on multiple occasions. Smallwood has been used as a defensive midfielder during his time at Hull City, offering protection to the Tigers backline. The 31-year-old has contributed in front of goal this season too, scoring two goals and grabbing an assist from the 35 games he has featured in this campaign.

George Honeyman

Having come through the Sunderland academy, Honeyman has gone on to make over 100 appearances for Hull City since leaving the Stadium of Light. Despite missing the first several weeks of the season, Honeyman has come back into the side to help Hull move up the table. Since returning from injury, he has nine goal contributions to his name, which is the second best at the club behind Keane Lewis-Potter. Honeyman is often the more attack minded of Hull’s midfielders, helping link the play from defence to attack. He has played in multiple midfield positions for the Tigers this season, with the attacking midfield position being the one he has featured the most in.

REPORT: HULL CITY 0-1 TOWN

Town bounce back on the road

Huddersfield Town had a flying start to the run in, sealing a 1-0 win over Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Friday evening.

Harry Toffolo’s second half rebound effort saw the Terriers bounce back to winning ways in their first Sky Bet Championship game following the March international break.

The game got off to a very energetic start, with both sides trying to establish some dominance.

Lee Nicholls was called into action in the ninth minute, flying to his left to tip over a Hull free-kick from danger man Keane Lewis-Potter.

Town came close to breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute. Some excellent play from Lewis O’Brien, Harry Toffolo, and Josh Koroma saw the ball fall to Duane Holmes in the box, but his half-volley was blocked before it could trouble Matt Ingram.

The game settled for a period, with Hull enjoying possession. They came close to taking the lead in the 34th minute, as full back Fleming got inside Jon Russell to curl in a cross. Fortunately for Town, Tom Eaves couldn’t quite reach it, seeing it run out for a goal kick.

The 41st minute saw an exchange between Sorba Thomas and Brandon Fleming in front of the dugouts, for which both players were booked.

The first minute of added time brought a big moment. Under pressure from Rhodes as a cross was delivered, a defender threw himself into a diving header, and replays showed he cleared it behind with his hand rather than his head. However, no penalty was given!

Seconds later, big Hull striker Tom Eaves was sent off following a second yellow card. His first came for a cynical foul on Levi Colwill, whilst his second followed a foul on O’Brien.

Town got out of the blocks fastest in the second half, with Josh Koroma having a couple of early shots. His first was blocked, whilst his second was saved well by Ingram.

Moments later, some great work from Sorba Thomas saw him feed Rhodes, but the latter’s first-time effort was well blocked by Sean McLoughlin before it could trouble their ‘keeper.

The 54th minute saw Ingram unleash an absolute miracle save to deny Koroma! Getting down quickly to his left, he denied the forward from close range as Town looked certain to take the lead.

Town made attacking changes as the game wore on, but it increasingly looked like the goal might not come despite a deluge of balls into the Hull box - and another possible penalty that was awarded as a free-kick as Koroma was felled.

However, the deadlock was finally broken in the 79th minute by Toffolo! Second half substitute Danel Sinani swung in a great ball which Tom Lees headed goalwards. Ingram saved it well, but the rebound fell to Toffs who made no mistake in finding the back of the net!

Hull came INCREDIBLY close to finding an equaliser in the final minute of added time. Thankfully, Allahyar’s bouncing header was wide!

The referee blew his final whistle, seeing the Terriers run out with all three Sky Bet Championship points.
