REPORT: NORWICH 7–0 TOWN

6 April 2021

Huddersfield Town were beaten 7-0 by Norwich City in the Sky Bet Championship.

Teemu Pukki (3), Emi Buendia, Todd Cantwell, Kieran Dowell and Jordan Hugill were on the scoresheet for the hosts on a difficult night for Town at Carrow Road.

Carlos Corberán made five changes to the side that face Brentford just three days earlier. Richard Stearman, Juninho Bacuna and Isaac Mbenza all came into the starting XI alongside Danny Ward who was making his 100th start for the Club.

Joel Pereira also started in goal following a late change to the line-up, with the on-loan Manchester United ‘keeper replacing Ryan Schofield who missed out through illness, despite being named in the original XI.

It was the Sky Bet Championship leaders who started on the front foot on home soil and having had their first attempt of the game denied by a last-ditch Richard Keogh sliding block, they found the way through to open the scoring after six minutes.

Todd Cantwell tricked his way down the left side of the penalty area before pulling the ball back for Teemu Pukki who diverted the low cross into the net to put Norwich 1-0 up.

The hosts, who were having the majority of the ball in the early goings, were continuing to push Town deep on the pitch and got their second as a result on 20 minutes.

Emi Buendia found the Canaries’ first goalscorer, Pukki, in behind the Terriers defence with the striker bursting forward before finding the net for the second time.

The Norfolk club got a third just after the midway point in the half as Buendia turned from playmaker to scorer, seeing his low strike from a central area 25 yards out go in off the post.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, Buendia was involved again, teeing up Todd Cantwell who picked out the top corner from the edge of the penalty area to make it 4-0.

In the minutes before the break, the table toppers again threatened Town’s goal. Buendia saw his latest strike cannon back off the crossbar after he had the ball rolled into his path from a free-kick before Pukki, now searching for a hat-trick, had a shot blocked by Keogh.

Just before half-time, the hosts got their fifth. Buendia combined quickly with Kieran Dowell with the former squaring for the latter who found the net from the edge of the six-yard area.

After the break, there was a change in shape along with several alterations. One of which was Sorba Thomas who was introduced and forced a save out of Tim Krul with his first action of the game.

Fellow substitute Scott High also tried his luck with one of his first touches, firing over after a corner fell to him on the edge of the box.

The game’s next goal came at the other end however as the Canaries got their sixth. Isaac Mbenza brought down Oliver Skipp inside the area with Pukki stepping up to convert and complete his hat-trick.

Town went close to getting a goal back with just over 15 minutes left to play. Demeaco Duhaney rose highest to meet a corner from the left but saw his glancing header come back off the base of the post.

The game’s final goal went to Norwich however, when Max Aarons popped up on the left and rolled the ball into the path of substitute Jordan Hugill who finished from close range to complete the scoring on a tough evening for Town in the south east.
