MATCH PREVIEW: CHARLTON ATHLETIC (A)

8 December 2019

Everything you need to know ahead of Town’s trip to Charlton Athletic

- Preview ahead of Charlton Athletic vs Town
- All the info on Lee Bowyer’s side
- Tickets still available for the game

Huddersfield Town travel South to take on Charlton Athletic on Tuesday 10 December in the Sky Bet Championship at The Valley; 7.45pm kick off.

Danny Cowley’s side will be hoping to get back to winning ways following the weekend’s defeat to Leeds United at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The game is the second in the space of four days for the Terriers, before a trip to Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Town’s last away win at Charlton Athletic came in September 2013 as the Terriers left 2-1 winners thanks to first-half goals from Harry Bunn and Emyr Huws.

THE OPPOSITION

After three seasons in the third tier of English football, Charlton Athletic returned to the Sky Bet Championship following last season’s dramatic last-minute win in the Sky Bet League One Play Off Final against Sunderland.

Lee Bowyer’s side started off 2019-20 in good form, going unbeaten in their first six games, winning four of them in the process.

However, the Addicks have been troubled with a number of injuries to their First Team squad in recent games, which has seen an unfortunate change in fortune for the side.

Going into Tuesday’s game, Charlton sit 17th in the table.

ONES TO WATCH

Macauley Bonne

The 24-year-old forward signed for Charlton in June 2019 following two years at Leyton Orient, helping propel his former side to the Football League with 24 League goals in 2018-19. He scored his first goal for The Addicks in September as they beat Leeds United 1-0. He followed that up by scoring four goals in his next five games. Bonne has six Sky Bet Championship goals to his name so far.

Conor Gallagher

Midfielder Gallagher was another summer addition to Lee Bowyer’s side after signing on loan for the 2019-20 season from Chelsea, with the move to The Valley being the first taste of senior football for Gallagher. Charlton’s No.11 has adapted well to life with The Addicks, scoring his first goal for the Club on his home debut in August in Charlton’s 3-1 victory over Stoke City. He has also appeared for England at U21 level this season following his good displays at Club level.

Jason Pearce

Pearce has been with The Addicks since August 2016 after leaving Wigan Athletic. He was appointed Charlton’s team captain in 2018. Pearce was an important part of the squad which achieved promotion back to the second tier of English football last season, making 28 appearances in the process.

REPORT: CHARLTON 0-1 TOWN

10 December 2019

Matty Daly’s late winner seals the three points!

A night that started terribly thanks to traffic issues delaying the Town coach on route to the Valley ended in perfect fashion, with a first senior goal from Academy graduate Matty Daly sealing a welcome win against Charlton Athletic.

In truth, Town had a level of control throughout the 90 minutes against their similarly injury-hit hosts, but it looked like the game would end goalless until the teenage second-half sub stepped up and swept home a pull-back from Flo Hadergjonaj in comprehensive fashion.

Already contending with a long list of injuries and suspension, Manager Danny Cowley was dealt another blow pre-match when Demeaco Duhaney failed to recover from illness.

That meant that London-born Rarmani Edmonds-Green, who was on loan at Brighouse Town less than a year ago, stepped into the team at the unfamiliar position of right back to make his Sky Bet Championship debut.

He barely put a foot wrong all game alongside his similarly competent defensive colleagues, who were expertly shielded by the midfield double of Jonathan Hogg and Juninho Bacuna. In the end, the Addicks didn’t have a shot on target to trouble Kamil Grabara.

Another Londoner, Josh Koroma, set the agenda with a speculative volley inside nine minutes as Town enjoyed good possession throughout.

Steve Mounié forced goalkeeper Phillips into a better save in the 20th minute after Hogg won a 50-50 on halfway and set Kachunga away, who slipped the Benin international into the area.

Karlan Grant, who made his 150th career appearance on his return to the Valley, soon should have done better with a pass to the unmarked Koroma in the area after leaving Jonathan Leko for dead, but he overplayed the execution and the ball ran dead.

The second half continued in the same fashion, with Grant and then Koroma testing Phillips low to his left with curling efforts from outside the area. On both occasions, the goalkeeper was equal to the task.

Mounié headed a deep corner wide as the game entered the final half hour, with Charlton unable to muster a good attempt. Kachunga, diligent in his defensive work, executed a good block to prevent Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher a shot at goal soon after.

Perhaps Charlton’s best effort was expertly snuffed out by some excellent defending from left back Hadergjonaj, who had one of his best games in a Town shirt. A pull back from the Town right evaded several players inside the box and looked to be rolling perfectly for Chris Solly to strike, but the Kosovo international got across excellently to execute a sliding block.

Substitute Lyle Taylor was flagged offside well before Charlton bundled a set-piece home in the final five minutes and the game looked to be petering out, only for Daly to have other ideas. Hadergjonaj – now operating on the left wing after the introduction of the returning Danny Simpson – isolated his defender and went on the outside before pulling the ball back to the penalty spot, where Daly stepped forward to sweep the ball comprehensively to the left of Phillips right in front of the travelling supporters.
