Signing on loan, Delano Burgzorg may join us from German Bundesliga side 1. FSV Mainz 05, but it was in his native Netherlands where he has played most of his club football.
He played at a few clubs as a teenager, but it was with Dutch side De Graafschap that he turned professional. Burgzorg didn’t have to wait long for his senior debut, which came at just 19 years old in January 2018. He made six substitute appearances that season as his side gained promotion out of the county’s second tier and into the Eredivisie.
The next season, 2018/19, was a breakthrough one for Delano. He made 20 starts and a further 15 substitute appearances in De Graafschap’s debut season back in the top-flight, scoring nine goals in the process. That form earned him a call-up to the Netherlands Under-20 international side in March 2019.
On the back of that success, Delano moved overseas and joined Italian side Spezia in 2019. In a season where they gained promotion to Serie A, he made five starts and five substitute appearances on the left of a front three.
However, he moved back to Holland in January 2020 to join Heracles Almelo, initially on loan. After a goal in three starts and two substitute appearances in the second half of the Eredivisie season, the club converted the loan into a permanent move.
Burgzorg was a regular in the side for the next 18 months as Almelo flirted with qualification for Europe, finishing ninth in the 2020/21 Eredivisie table. He made 38 starts and 14 substitute appearances, scoring 10 times, which earned him another big move in January 2022.
It was to Germany and the Bundesliga that he headed next, joining 1. FSV Mainz 05. Illness restricted him to just one goal in three substitute appearances as the club finished eighth in the table in 2021/22, just one place outside European qualification, but that didn’t deter the club from making the move permanent that summer on a three-year deal.
Delano’s first full Bundesliga season saw him make 14 substitute appearances across all competitions, in which he scored once, as Mainz finished ninth once again.
