- 20-year-old puts pen to paper on deal until 2022
- Comments from Head Coach Jan Siewert

Lewis O’Brien has signed a new contract with Huddersfield Town ahead of the start of the 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship campaign!

The 20-year-old, who has enjoyed an impressive pre-season following his return from a season-long loan with Bradford City, has put pen-to-paper on an improved contract that will run until the end of June 2022, with the Club holding the option of an additional year’s extension.

Lewis, who plays in central midfield but can also operate out wide, is a former two-time winner of the Club’s Academy Player of the Year accolade.

He’s yet to make his competitive debut for Town’s First Team, although he was named as an unused substitute for an Emirates FA Cup game at Bolton Wanderers in January 2018.

Instead, Lewis’ first experience of senior football came with Bradford City during a season-long loan with the Sky Bet League 1 side in 2018/19. O’Brien excelled with the Bantams during a difficult season, playing 46 games in all competitions and scoring four goals.

He’s subsequently played in all three public-facing games of the pre-season campaign with Jan Siewert’s First Team, catching the eye with his performances against SpVgg Greuther Fürth and Hamburger SV in Austria last week.

Huddersfield Town Head Coach Jan Siewert commented:

“It is great news for everyone that Lewis has signed his new contract.

“I think that everyone has been able to see the benefits that his experiences at Bradford City last season have given him. He’s come back to us with his confidence high and he can fit into our squad with his level of performance, as we’ve seen in pre-season.

“He is still only 20, so he definitely has space to improve further. That’s an exciting thought, as we have already seen he can make an impact for us.

“Credit to all the staff in our Academy who have helped Lewis in his development too.”
